Making my first gunstock almost 50 yrs ago I consulted with an old man that was the master of the art. He told me of the best scraper he ever used. Here is what I used making a couple of walking sticks from sumac.

That old-school scraper trick sounds perfect for sumac and similar woods. Mind sharing a couple pics of the scraper and the finished walking sticks? Would love to see how it performs.

What you see is the curved scraper on the walking stick. Ike glass has worked well for me on hickory hammer handles too. Sorry but the walking sticks are on loan to son and d in law.
