I received my ornament from @Phil.H the other day. I finally had time to take some pics of it today.

Very nice Phil! That's an attractive ornament and bonus points for being the first! Guess I've got to start thinking about a design now!

Thanks Marc! Glad you like it!
Hollow form is butternut and the finials are maple.
Believe it or not the little candy cane was harder to make. Hundreds of little knots really kill the fingers.

People on WB even make better shipping boxes than I do regular boxes. The contents will be revealed when I get time to do a proper photo!

Very cool piece Mark! Great piece of wood, I like the hourglass figure that you captured in the wood.

Received an ornament from @TimR

Sweet Banksia Pod with finial made out of Red Tip Photinia
(per Tim 😀)

Beautiful finish and form! A couple extra Woodbarter peanuts in the box too! Happy holidays and thanks Tim!

Tim,

The stopper was actually made by a very inactive WoodBarter member that passed away in October. Eric had made many things for me and my family over the years and I wanted to share some of the joy with others. Kind of a cop-out but I hope Roger enjoys it and the many peanuts I sent along.

Roger, I included a small write up about my actions in the package. Hope you saw it and did not discard as packing.

Not a cop out at all. Perfect sentiment for this season of sharing and giving!

Beautiful ornament @TimR! The Banksia makes a unique and eye catching ornament.

Saw it and read it Appreciate it all. I'll post some of projects I make with peanuts.

Ok, I've already showed you the box that my ornament from @DLJeffs was shipped in. Now I will show you the ornament that was contained in it. Absolutely amazing. That with the note he enclosed was very appreciated and heart-felt. I bet I have the only christmas tree made from KOA and with abalone inlay ornaments and with an abalone bird topper (now you know why the box!). Amazing! I only wish I could do it justice with my limited camera and materials and lighting here at the office. But I did let it sit on an appropriately regal piece of wood - pernambuco.

Fabulous!

First, thanks everyone. As I mentioned to Tim, as long as it was made from koa, I figured I couldn't disappoint Mike. Heck, he could always just take it apart and put the koa on his shelf. I don't turn so I had to make something from mostly flat pieces of wood. The tree concept fit the bill but seemed kind of plain so I decided to inlay some little mother-of-pearl diamonds that my guitar coach gave me. The inlay isn't really difficult if you have a Dremel with a fine bit. Place your MoP piece where you want it and hold it firmly in place. Use a sharp narrow pointed Exacto blade to trace the outline of the MoP, try to achieve a shallow cut line. Then use your Dremel to route out inside the cut lines. Set the bit depth to match your MoP or just a hair deeper. If you watch closely, you'll see when the wood flies out along the cut line without the bit actually touching the cut line. Test fit your MoP piece and make adjustments as needed. Then I used two part epoxy and mix in a little fine sawdust of the koa because it helps hide any wide cuts lines or gaps. Then just sand it all smooth and finish as you usually would. And the abalone bird topper was also in the stuff my guitar coach gave me so all I had to do was glue it on. I was just glad Mike liked it.
