Going slowly through my hand tools and offering this for consideration. Master Blacksmith Ogata-San Hand forged Japanese 42mm Plane & Chip Breaker Set (Old White Paper Steel No.1), 30 plus years “NOS”. Nigata Perfecture: Echigo Yoita. The old wrought iron is typically reclaimed from either two sources- old bridge or railroad tracks. The steel is hand forged out of old white paper/shirogami steel no. 1. Bevel angle on the plane blade is approximately 28 degrees. Unfortunately this particular well known blacksmith who specializes in hand planes in Japan does not forged anymore as he passed away circa 2016.
I have a completed custom “dai” block plane that came specifically with this 42mm plane/chip breaker set made also by well known plane master craftsman- photo’s shown for reference. You only need a block of dry and well seasoned hardwood (white oak, red oak, etc. that has to be rift sawn or flat sawn; quarter sawn not ideal due to bowing)- figured oak would be a bonus for eye candy. A lot of you here have the experience, skill set and the tools to get one done- cheaper to do it yourself, because a commercial block plane sells for about $ 75 plus ride from Japan which can runs anywhere from
$ 30-40 for this size. Length and width can vary depending on your desired use. The brass pin that holds the plane and chip breaker can be purchased easily at a hardware store for a couple of bucks. I can take a photo session with a measuring tape if you want to replicate this exact same size block.
This size block plane is very useful for luthiery like horizontal bracing, headstock/neck, flattening out the fretboard as well as for furniture and general woodworking. It really stays sharp and hold it’s edge for a very long time compared to western blades- it will render very, very thin, translucent like slices similar to “onion peels”. This is actually very sharp as is- I have not lapped it and sharpened it. I have maintained both pieces with Japanese Camellia oil to keep it from rusting.
Price is $ 85 plus $ 8.25 shipping cost via small flat rate box via USPS. This is unused and new old stock.
