Offering a species you will probably never ever see due to their natural habitat shrinking over time as these lands are “converted to pasture”. This species is considered rare and its endangered species status is listed “at risk”. There are two acacia species endemic to Hawai’i- Hawaiian “acacia” koa and its dwarfed/compact cousin, Hawaiian “acacia” koai’a (or dwarf koa). The name koai’a is a combination of “koa” like the tree and i’a as in fish. Koai’a is durable and fashioned to make “shark hooks”. Koai’a is a lot denser, harder and has gnarled grain.
How much denser is koai’a compare to koa? On average koai’a is about 5.3 pounds per board foot and koa on the other hand is about 3.3 pounds per board foot. That is about 46% difference in density. Koai’a is slightly denser and harder than Madagascar rosewood and Brazilian Pernambuco (about 5 pounds per board foot). Koai’a in my experience has silkier hand and smoother surface. It will polish like glass.
Without further ado, this listing is for three (3) Hawaiian acacia koai’a- ideal for knife handles. The one side edge is its natural patina since I have had possession of it, which is about close to 25 years. This was original harvested in the big Island of Hawai’i and was air dried there, then it was transported into the “Emeral Isle” (Kaua’i) and finish drying via kiln. This is dry and well seasoned wood- it is currently at approximately 9-10% moisture content. These are flat saw cut with excellent growth ring spacing. Ends sealed with anchor seal.
