I was looking to get a neck build and really wanting a pink ivory neck, so I was looking though to see if I can dig one up to use. I found this unique piece and I was going to pack this up as it is the only one I have found in this color way that I had slated for 2 individual guitar fretboards. It is unusual color way for pink ivory as it has salmon pink hues in it and it has some tiger curl (the side edge is figured). If you saw this in person, you would have mistaken it for Brazilian pernambuco, but it is not and this is 100% South African Pink Ivory. You can easily yield 16 or conservatively 12 pen blanks. This is fairly clean for pink ivory with the exception of seasoned drying checks that are broken and not continuous- the one closes to the end grain is 7/16” deep and 2” long. I’ve stabilized it and drop filled with thin cyano. There is also 3-1/2” of partial sapwood at the one end. There is a layer of fine Anchorseal on this plank to ward off humidity. But, plenty of pen blanks with the quantity I listed above that you can keep some and trade some.
This is old and seasoned stock. Flat sawn cut. Rough surfaced planed. Dimensions are approximately 24.75” x 3.25” x .915” thick- snipe at end 2.75” affected length (.825” thickness at this area). Air dried/kiln dried currently at 11% mc. Physical weight is about 2.66 pounds. Yes it is hard, dense and heavy about 5 pounds per board foot.
