Convert your Taiwan 15" planer to true variable speed

Does anyone have one, and how do you like it? My old bridgewood 15" planer has lots of issues and I have made the decision to junk it. I only paid $450 for it many years ago. The grizzly caught my eye, it seems like a deal for a 15" planer with a spiral head.

EDIT: I edited the title of this thread to better represent the content. My original intent was to junk the old Taiwan planer and replace it with a new bench top, then it occurred to me that I could maybe replace the bad gearbox with a variable speed gear motor. I'm happy with the results and the total cost was under $200 . Perhaps this will help someone else reserect a old planer. Scroll down for pictures.
Wow !! 15" planer! Can I bring some wood by to plane ??

Never mind, ... I know a guy here in Fort Lauderdale, FL with a 30" planer

Does the guard also act as a slide for the chain to ride?
Not yet, maybe after a little more wear. I tried to take out a link but needs just a little more run time. At this point I am not planning on a idler sprocket to tighten the chain, plenty of teeth engaging the chain. It's a pretty low RPM setup and the alignment is about perfect.
