I received an email about 45min ago from Daming Qie, the wife of David Clark. She informed me that David passed away on Thursday May 28th in his sleep in the hospital. David was one of the largest, if not the largest, contributors of wood samples for hobbit house. I'm sure David is known for many other things, but I only recently met him this month when he responded to my IWCS wanted listing. He and i had been conversing via email over the last several weeks, during which time he had been in and out of the hospital dealing with complications of CHF among other health issues. In the short period I got to know David, i learned a great deal about the process and complications in wood identification. If any of you knew him better, feel free to say whatever you like about David.

Is there gonna be something to contribute to his children like we had with Paul or not?

Anyway, convey my condolences together with everyone else’s.

David's kids are grown. He always told me they were well off. He was sending me samples last week, wonder if it happened. He had a very interesting life. His South Africa experiences did scar him a bit and sadly I can understand a good portion. Him and Paul had a disbute going the last year of Paul's life. David did supply many samples to Hobbit House. He purchased samples, had them sent to Paul and Paul used those he wanted for the site. Once Paul was done, he forwarded the samples to David who in turn gave them all labels and in turn sent to his clients. David supplied many universities and government agencies with samples for wood ID, a good portion to China.

He visited us in 2015, always sent Christmas Cards and joked about the weather. He will be missed.

Edit: David joined Woodbarter several years ago but was never very active.

Mark, thank you for that. I had a feeling you might be able to provide more details about David.

In the brief period I'd known him he conveyed to me his concerns over proper wood identification. He seemed a bit pessimistic; however, it's possible that i was misinterpreting things since we only communicated via email. David had also said he was going to send me some samples, and he was going to send me a draft of a book he had been working on regarding the Hongmu method of wood identification. It never got to the point of me supplying my mailing address, so im sure nothing was ever sent. He had noted to me that he was in the ER at one point, and in some cases he was emailing from the hospital. So i think he was probably just too busy dealing with his own health problems to get anything else done.
