Someone here has said that the only dumb questions are those that go unasked. That said, here are a couple that need to become "undumbed"!

1. I've repeatedly seen the abreviation "CA" used with the word "glue" can someone please expand the term for me so I can research availability and uses for it.

2. Can someone please explain the proceess of "stabilization" with examples of when it is best used?

Thanks
Mike

CA - cyanoacrylate - superglue

stabilization can be done a couple of ways and it's usually used for wood that's not as stable - for example, spalted wood.

In fact, CA can be used to stabilize. I've done it for pens and bottle stoppers. by using a thin CA and letting it soak into the wood and cure before turning some more, the wood is harder and less likely to break apart.

More commonly, stabilization is done by using a resin in a vacuum chamber. By submerging the wood under the resin and pumping down the pressure in the chamber, the resin is drawn into the wood to fill the voids. You can also include a color in the resin if that's an effect you are trying to get.

I'm sure others have done more with this than I have, but there's a quick view to help you get started on your search for knowledge.

I can't add anything to what Ken said great description. I've been waiting for my chamber & Cactus Juice stuff from Curtis (Mesquite Man) for a couple weeks can't wait to get my hands on it - and wood in it!

Thanks Ken...I can see why it's abreviated now. Superglue I know and understand, just didn't know it by that name

Just got my production chamber from Curtis on Friday. I spent Saturday and Sunday stabilizing all sorts of wood blanks. The Cactus juice works great and Curtis makes a nice product.

The juice did turn the FBE a little 'muddy', but I might have to experiment. Just FYI, for those who don't know what we are talking about, his company's name is TurnTex. BG
