For all of you who make knives or custom pistol grips, this is a special offer for Fiddleback-Figured White Ash. In my 40 years of woodworking, I have never seen better curly figure in ash.

I found this board about 25 years ago in a small Amish sawmill. We tried to find the other boards from this tree but they were (apparently) already sold. I've used it for tool handles, small jewelry boxes and as trim on large pieces. Now I only have enough left to make a few sets of knife scales and a dozen or so pencil turning blanks. If you are interested in more of this special wood than is offered in this listing, just ask.

This listing is for three sets of knife scales. They measure 6 inch long, 1.5 inches wide and 0.375 inches thick. The photos show the front and back of each piece and some photos of the "mother" board that has a rub of beeswax finish.

The price is $12 plus shipping of $4.50 within the USA. They will ship in a padded envelop by first class mail. These scales are also listed for sale in my Etsy store.

Could i see the pen blanks also? I yam interested in a couple of em...
Marc, as soon as I can (lots of orders right now), I will cut some pen blanks and post photos. I also have some very nice curly koa shorts that I'm planning to turn into pen blanks, knife scales and 1911 handle blanks. I just printed your Nominal Sizes list this morning to help me. I also have some Central American rosewood shorts that will be cut. My Etsy store has been keeping me very busy. Lots of wedding and baby shower orders for wood centerpieces. Why did I ever think retirement would be calm and restful???

Marc,
I had a few minutes between jobs and cut a strip off the curly ash "mother" board for pen blanks. I was able to get eight from that strip. If I can ship them with the knife scales, they will all fit in a SFRB if I cut two of the blanks down from 6" to 5.25". Can you take all eight of them? $2.00 per piece.

I also have another billet from this same board that is 38" long by 2.5 by 2.75 and it has no defects. A perfect billet and it's rift sawn so the curly figure is uniform all way around the billet. I'm thinking about cutting it into blanks for salt and pepper mills but the 2.5 dimension may be too small. See the photo below, taken to show two adjacent sides. The entire billet has this figure. Any thoughts? How can I maximize the value of this billet?

@FranklinWorkshops Larry do you have another set of knife scales with that figure?
I do. When I cut the pen blanks for Marc, I was left with a strip ½ inch thick by 24 in long by 2.5 wide. I can cut it into 6 in lengths and sell it for $9 plus shipping. Interested? It's too heavy for first class mail so it would go in a SFRB.

Yessir PM me and I'll get your info!

Larry, before you cut the Rosewood shorts could I see them? I might be interested in buying them as is, save you the trouble of cutting them up.

Larry, what would be your asking price for the whole piece?

Matt,

Is $30 too much. I'm not sure about the cost of shipping the 38" length. Do you want it cut into certain lengths? If kept whole, I would have to make a box for it
out of some bigger boxes and I've done that before. Please advise if I can cut it for you.

Larry, I'm interested. I'm on my way out the door to teach a class this evening, but will post with a full reply later.

Hey Marc. Do you want the pen blanks I cut this morning? You can buy just a couple if that's all you want. I sent you a PM to request shipping information
for the knife scales you wanted.

Thanks, Larry

Larry, is FedEx Ground an option that works for you to ship by? I just ran the price calculator for a package at 40" x 3" x 3" and 10lbs (just put a number in there because I didn't know the weight) and it estimated $19.11 from your location to mine. Would probably be cheaper with a FedEx account, but I don't have one of those. And I'd be in no hurry, so if it would take a few days or so to get it to FedEx to go out, that's not a problem for me. Been kinda keeping my eye out for a special piece of something for a build I'm doing this summer and this jumped out at me. I'm building a pair of smaller wood tool chests - one for my father, one for myself - this summer sometime and this would, I think, be a great piece to slice drawer fronts from as the tallest drawer will be approximately the width of this piece.

If FedEx Ground isn't an option, let me know and I'll figure out where I'd like it cut.

Matt, FedEx Ground is perfect for me. I'll send you a PM to get the shipping information.
I can't think of a better use for this special piece of wood. Your dad will be very pleased, I know.
Thanks.

4 of them is good for me. Sorry for the late reply!!

Wanted to just chime in about Ash. I frequent the cutoff pile at a place called Hearne Hardwoods here in NJ a lot. I go there for other stuff and then end up at that pile looking for cool things. I recently picked up a piece of ash there that was really shocking. I never had realized that Ash was such a nice wood. I always thought it was just a plain jane oak like product. I'll grab a photo of it. Was just really surprised it was even Ash when I brought it up and asked them. So this is another example I guess of how nice that wood is.
