This is a piece of black walnut crotch that will make 6 pot calls. It measures 12.7 long by 4.25 wide by 2.0 thick. Asking $15 plus shipping of $8 to anywhere in the USA. There has been some walnut oil rubbed on the wood to show its rich color. The front was only skip planed so there is a rough un-planed section on the lower left side.

Hi Larry,

Sorry I'm a few days behind. Received the package and the wood is gorgeous. Thanks for the extras. The long leaf pine looks interesting. It's heavier than pine you get today and the grain seems tighter as well. I would love to build a work bench from it. Thanks again and take care.

Appreciate your note, Bill. Yeah, that old longleaf pine is very special. It's totally unlike any pine available commercially except for the guys putting it into flooring.
The only way to get this virgin growth wood is to recover it in old mill buildings. In the 1800s it was commonly used for structures where heavy load-bearing was required. The man that has a great inventory is Jonas Hochstetler in Stuarts Draft, VA. His website is: http://www.appalachianwoods.com

They refer to it as "antique heart pine." I bought several large beams from him many years ago and still have a couple. Here's photos of a section I recently cut for some home decor items I'm selling. Jonas and his sons will be happy to ship some beams to you, I'm sure.

This wood also makes fantastic pens. I have many blanks if you're interested at $1.50 each. @HistoryPens bought a box not long ago and turned one for me.
Love it.

@Tony can mark this offer as "ended"

Gorgeous wood. I know there are still live trees in many areas but pieces like you and I have are unlike the ones growing today. Just look at how long it took for this tree to grow even one inch in radius. Mine was cut before 1830 so the resin is hard. Yours looks like it still running. Lots of resin in this wood.

Larry,

It is really gorgeous wood and that's a beautiful pen. I would have to think that the shipping on getting even one beam from VA to NY would probably be as much as the wood itself. You can't buy one beam anyway I think the smallest minimum order I saw on their site was 200bf. I'll have to keep my eye out for something closer to where I live for now. Take care.

I took my F250 with 8’ bed down and Jonas cut the 24’ beams into 8’ sections and loaded them. It took four of us to unload the sections one at a time. Heavy is an understatement. The beams are 12/4 thick and 14” wide. I have to chainsaw 2’ sections just to handle them in my shop. Have since sold the truck. Would have to rent a Penske now.

Hmmm...I may be up that way in September! :ponder::ponder::ponder:

Nope. About 2 1/2 hours. Where do I find the info on them?

This one was estimated to be 400 yrs old. Supposedly one of the oldest found in the SE

Absolutely. Just count those rings. I know that at lease one of the trees used for the beams I purchased was 400 years old. The pith was on one edge and I counted 390 with a microscope and the tree was bigger that that originally. There have been documented examples of that species being over 500 years old. Very dense and sloooooow growing. So the tree you show above was virgin growth, no doubt.

I know it's been a few days on this post, but just wanted to add that the smell of this wood is amazing. I love working with it!
Exactly. It's like a normal yellow pine smell on steroids. Hard to imagine until you cut it. And the fragrance lingers in the air for hours.

Could I just cut you a section from the beam that would fit in a large FR game box (23.25" long by 11.5 by 3") That way you can re-saw it to whatever size you need. That sucker will weigh 35 lbs but (as the PO says, if it fits, it ships). If you don't have the equipment to handle that, I could saw it into boards for you but I need to know your desired widths and thickness. All will be 23.25 long for cheapest shipping. Cost is $15 per board foot.
