**ENDED** 2 PIECES OF SPALTED NORFOLK ISLAND PINE

[attachment=5811]Here are my last 2 pieces of nicely spalted NIP ..........4 1/4 " Dia X 8 1/2 " long and 4 1/2 " Dia X 8 1/2 " long ....both have 5 tight knots. I usually get $30 + for these but they are available here at a discount of $20 plus shipping of $11.35 USPS Medium Flat Rate Box.....USA . I have approx. 30 -40 more pieces of Florida grown NIP, mostly 10 - 12 " dia. that are CURING .......drying a little and spalting. They won't be ready until Sept- Oct when I get back from my summer stay in NC mountains. David from Hawaii can probably supply some nice pieces this summer. The trees grow wild there but only grow as ornamental here in Florida. I get them on their way to the land fill. Both these pieces have spalting , one more than the other , and are relatively dry ....no cracks. Wet this wood real well before turning ........much easier for end grain cutting . Thanks.

Those look really nice - I just don't think I'm quite up to the challenge (yet) of producing something nice from either of them.

Since I've never turned anything hollow form (not even the handle for my hollow form tool :) I think I'll let someone else grab these.

We don't have any:ufw: of that kind of wood on the east coast of Florida, just the west coast. :lolol:

Neat stuff, Joe! NIP is one of my favorites especially with knots and a heavy spalt. I'm curious about your choice to dry it... I've always tried to work it while it's still relatively green. I've heard the liquid dish washing liquid makes for a nice soaking material to facilitate turning it when dry, but I've never had the occasion to try it. Just picking your brain...

Oh I bet you have all kinds of IRW, CM, and big camphor over there. Just leave your keys under the mat, the boat keys too. Please keep a good stock of ballyhoo in the freezer. While you are gone for the summer Zoe and I will hang out on the beach for a couple weeks and have your garage loaded. :rotflmao3:

Sounds like a deal. Will you pick the weeds ? My boat is 13 feet .....too small for ocean fishing . I have pineapples growing ....ripen in July - Aug. Yes, you could hang out on the beach and buy t-shirts at Ron Johns Surf Shop. There are two HUGH indian rosewood trees growing on my street...maybe 50 feet tall and 3 foot dia at the base. At $18 BF, how much are they worth ? My garage is already loaded with wood and other stuff !!!!! :rotflmao3::lolol:

Yes, that is true about the liquid dish washing detergent . I believe Ron Kent was the first woodturner to try that with much success . www.ronkent.com I mostly soak mine in water just before turning. If I allow too much moisture on the wood for any length of time ( for spalting ) it really gets nasty ,with lots of black stuff under the bark , etc. So I prefer the longer duration time for slow drying and spalting.

Thanks, Joe! When you say you 'soak' the pieces, do you mean you submerge them in water for a period of time? How long? I'd love to know a bit more about your process for working with dry NIP.

I am familiar with Ron Kent... He does beautiful work with NIP. The last few pieces of NIP I had were still pretty green, so I didn't have to do anything special when turning them. I did get my oil/mineral spirit soak info from Ron's website.... Worked like a charm!
