Here are four, 4.25 x 4.25 x 78" Walnut posts available for sale or trade. I bought these from a tree service fellow who cut down the dead walnut trees in the mid '80's. I have had them stored indoors for the past 20 years. The Walnut is from Western Colorado and has more variegated tones of reds, black and lighter streaks. Each post weighs around 40#, and checked 0% MC with the meter. I don't believe the MC is zero, but they are dry.

As can be seen, the posts are not straight and have a bow over their length (one is about 1/4" over 4'). I sanded the end of one post and coated it with a little poly. I am willing to cut these into turning blanks for your projects, if needed.

For sale, I'm asking $6.50/bf + shipping.
For trade, exotic woods or anything unusual.

Pictures kinda tiny, eh?

Yes, they did come out small. I will repost pics tonight. I think I am getting the hang of which pic size to use for my thumbnail program. :morning1:

BG,

I don't require thumbnails - they drive me nuts on other forums so I just figure what the heck we're having full size images. Just keep your largest pixel size to 1000 or below, and your file size 700KB or less for a .jpg for example and you'll be fine.

.

I am interested in these...what are you looking for in trade, or cash? Also, can they each be cut into 4 pieces to fit into a flat rate box?

Thanks Kevin, I have messed up a few times and mistakenly tried to upload large files (2 MB)... and it doesn't work :) I'll get it figured out though :good2:

Doing a quick internet search, I have come up with an average price of between $1 to $1.50 per inch length. So, if someone bought all four, I would say $0.75/inch or $234 for all of it (plus shipping). If I ship from my workplace, using UPS Ground to Knoxville, TN (as an example destination), then I get and estimate of $30 for 42 pound box.

If someone wanted to buy a 12" piece (or so), then I would price it at $1/inch. Probably my best bet is to sell it as turning stock for bowls or spindles. I will trade for exotic woods such as cocobolo, rosewood, or anything unusual.

Thanks for checking it out! :drinks:

I'll have to pass on this one, thanks anyhow for the response. Your figures come out to around $10/bd ft and I can buy it from local sawyers for 2-$3/ bd ft and not have to contend with shipping.

Yes, I was figuring about $6.50/bf and the shipping adds another $3.50/bf. $2 - $3/bf is an awesome price and impossible to beat on this side of the Rockies.

Thanks again!

I'm kinda wondering about your moisture meter… I noticed on both walnut threads here that it registers '0%' which doesn't seem possible. I would think ambient humidity would give you some moisture content even if the wood had been kiln dried. I could be wrong, but I'm just throwing it out there.

Yeah, I agree. I just bought this meter two weeks ago and it registers moisture on wet wood, but on wood which is 'mostly dry', it seems to stay at zero... I am pressing on the back of the meter pretty hard to get the probes to sink into the wood. Here are pictures that I omitted originally to address this very issue.

My guess is that without a minimum level of water on the surface of the wood, the probes cannot register a reading. This doesn't mean the moisture level is zero, just low enough that it is not measurable... Moisture content is probably 3-5%... If I wanted to go crazy, I could cut off a piece, weigh it, dry in the oven, and weigh it again.
