Hi
Like I mentioned in my introductory thread I am a wood collector And I am always loooking for interesting, rare, and exotic specimens.
One of them is Dalbergia marítima.
Now let’s get one thing out of the way, I live in Finland (I have no problem paying shipping for this baby) and I do understand the situation of the dalbergia species in CITES, but the appendix 2 is a restriction not a ban on export and import.
On my experience I have never had any problem importing specimens, I have had mahogany, different type of Spanish cedars (all appendix 2 species) imported from South America. Also, Gary Green (from IWCS) had sent me in different times dalbergia species and Cuban mahogany, and even Araucaria araucana (appendix 1). However I would not judge anyone that is not willing to deal with it.
Saying all this, I will need just a small piece 3”x6”x1/2” so I can take any small piece of wood where I can get something close to that. I would also accept square 2,5” spindles and I could even take 2” if nothing else is available.
I know I might now get any reply but it is worth the try

sorry for the long post
Gonzalo

My understanding is that without proper paperwork all Dalbergias are not legal to send out of country. Now some do it but the law puts penalty on the seller/sender of said items. Seller pleading ignorant of laws is not a defense. all reputable companies have disclaimer about no sales out of USA. Not trying to derail your request but think any sellers should be aware of the possibility of penalty.

Don't see how anyone could tell without expert verification what a particular wood sample being shipped is, if I had some I would send it to you with zero hesitation or concern, but unfortunately I don't....

I do understand that and that’s why I wouldn’t blame anyone if they avoid the subject all together.
In my experience I have never had any problem with wood samples. Maybe because they are small and not really valuable for anything. I have had samples from some American IWCS members without any problem before, for example they have sent me cocobolo, kingwood, Brazilian tulipwod, actually I think my Brazilian rosewood sample cake from Gary. Also they don’t list the samples in the package they just add a declaration saying that they are wood samples with no commercial value.
But oh well I wanted to give it a try because I have been looking for this sample for over a year now

thanks!
Gonzalo

Or go to a dealer? They deal with the legal side daily... there is a shop in Atlanta that had that last time i was there - alas that has been well over a year ago thanks to covid... if you want his info let me know...

Hi, usually dealers are the ones less likely to go through this process specially for such a small piece. They might not even be willing to sell a piece that small

Dabergia nigra, I have 2 spare samples, but have been selling them for $20 a piece.
Thanks Mr. Peet but I already have a Dalbergia nigra sample. Actually I am pretty sure I got it from a IWCS member from America and I didn’t had any problem although Brazilian rosewood is in appendix 1
Your samples might be better than mine though because I only pay around $10 and it is half sapwood. Maybe I will change my sample eventually for yours

My bad, now I see you asked for D. maritima. As for your sample of D. nigra, having sapwood increases the value (not cost value) as most logs had the sapwood taken off before shipment. It also adds another level of information when using the sample to aid in identification of another wood. Don't replace it, add another sample to the collection to increase your reference base.

Is that Carlton's? Alas, one of my "want2's" but "haven't yet". Closed the one time I did try. Have found some individuals with some nice wood around Atlanta though. Twenty plus years ago ,one guy I tracked down had a bunch of whole briar burls (that's what I went for) as well as a bunch of other unusuals. Fun trip but have lost his contact. He was pretty old at the time.

I got lucky on more than one time in Hotlanta. Was there on a business trip to Hotlanta. We had opened an office there and was sent to track down some inconsistencies in the books of that office - eventually caught them for wrongdoing. While there, driving down Peachtree, I noticed a banner at the old High Museum (this was before it got all modern and artsy-fartsy) that had one word - Moulthrop - on it. I couldn't stop - had to get to the office, but returned at lunch. Had an eye-opening experience, felt as I was breathing in a rare atmosphere viewing many of Ed Mouthrop's turnings, as well as some from Bob Stockdale and Rude Osolnik. It was heady! I drove home and bought a better lathe - only had a falling apart craftsman and a jewelers lathe at the time Never have built the really big lathe to turn the big stuff - too cowardly I guess! .

That’s a good point! I think I can do that are your samples dark brown with black streaks because those look beautiful

Richard has reduced hours some, so call before you make the trip to confirm times.
