Need enough carving wood to make an approximately 10" x 10" x 24" carving/turning block of good carving wood. Basswood? Butternut? Good White Pine? Does not have to be one piece - I can glue planks together. And no need for any of that sissy purdy wood I buy elsewhere! I want good manly carving wood. It will be painted - so no problem what wood. The guy that I have been buying basswood from has decided he is too old to go cut down and mill trees. He is a nationally awarded carver, has carvings in many a country singer's house, and also happens to be a contractor - and cool guy - as well as being a very, very good carver - did I mention that already!. Last time I walked into his carving office, he was asleep and I startled him awake! His carving office is an old post office of a small town. LOL. I have plenty of mahogany to use, but really hate to use it for a painted carving.

Mike, I don't have any but I can get it at Hearne Hardwoods for you if no one here has it to offer. He has 16/4 stock.
Here is his current price list.

Hi Mike below are two nice pieces of Basswood. My intent is to give you a couple of options with this post. Let me know if any of these work for you.

Option 1. The piece pictured here is just over 10” wide and about 8 1/2’ long and 4” thick. I would cut 3 pieces 24” long from it so you could glue up. That would give you a starting point of about 10” x 12” x 24”. After planing a glue ready surface you’ll have plenty of room to get your 10” thick target.

3 pieces 10x24x4” thick. $27 ea = $81 plus shipping.

Option 2. I could cut 2 pieces from the piece above and also a 24” long piece from this board pictured below. It is 10” wide and 3” thick. The 3 pieces together would glue up to 10” x 11” x 24” before planing a glue ready surface. This will probably get you closest to your 10” thick target.

2 pieces 10x24x4” thick. $27 ea
1 piece 10x24 x 3” thick. $20 ea
Total $74 plus shipping.

Option 3 would be to cut 2 pieces from the 3” thick board and one piece from the 4” board. That would put you at roughly 10” x 10” x 24” before planing a glue ready surface. So this option will get you slightly less than 10” thick.

1 piece 10x24x 4” thick. $27 ea
2 pieces 10x24x 3” thick $20 ea
Total $67 plus shipping.

Already factoring in the planing loss. Need to net out about 9.25" one way and 9" the other axis - So option 3 would be more than adequate. I'll take it.

Secretary, called me and said that I received a heavy box. She wasn't kidding!!

Glad it arrived quickly. I did put everything in one box so it’s a little heavier probably than the normal mail you get. 😀
