Here is a recent find from brother's back yard in Tucson. I have stabilized this piece, so it is ready for turning. This piece of Cholla is 8" long x 2.5" OD x 1.25" ID. I am interested in any good wood for bangle stock. This would be a fun experiment for someone!

I am not set up to do it yet but I have seen guys after that stuff is stabilized cast it in a colored resin and then turn it and it looks really cool.

Any burls or exotic woods for bangle stock. My minimum size for bangles is 4" x 4" x 0.75". It can have cracks or checks that I can fix with CA or epoxy. I have another two feet of Cholla that is smaller in OD, but not stabilized just yet.

I will get the Cholla sent out this week. Thanks!

Eric;
Just a question out of curiosity - does Curtis stabilize them before casting? I would have guessed not - but thats what the learning curve is all about ! It makes sense - just something I hadn't considered.

I would guess not as well. I think the alumite probably does a sufficient job of sealing up the wood. I have never cast wood in resin and thought I would try to stabilize this piece of cholla.

That is a great looking piece of Cholla there. I cast that type Cholla into pen blanks and calls also using Alumilite. It turns great but can sure dull a HSS tool.

Chris;
Just curious - do you stabilize the cactus before you cast it? Just trying to get my head around the process. Thanks

No, I find the cactus is sturdy enough and the Alumilite will fill any voids and hold it together. I cast them at 80psi.

Chris, any way to make a bangle blank out of this stuff? I need a 3 1/4" OD x 1/2" think puck or ring... I collected the cholla in Tucson (from this thread) hoping to make it work, but it was too small (OD).

Are you looking for it cast or just a piece of cholla?

I have some cholla still, but it is too small for me to use.

Regarding your cast cholla, If you are interested in a trade for a bangle or a bangle core, let me know. I am not a pen turner, but these blue blanks are really cool:treehugger:. I am sure I could figure some way to use these:thanx:.
