I got a chance today to test out these chucks and it didn’t go so well. I took off the jaws it came with and screwed down my pen jaws, no issues there as the threads are good, I spun the chuck onto the headstock and opened the jaws, then tried to tighten down on a pen blank with the supplied bars, and nothing, won’t even budge either way. Is there some kind of trick to getting them to tighten/loosen? I tested the other used one and it spins freely, the cosmo line is still holding the 3rd chuck. What do you suggest here?

Few things come to mind, if it was opened all the way maybe it jumped the teeth or the screws are too long and binding on the chuck body with the pen jaws. Try loosen the jaws to see if it moves. Post a pic with it in the stuck position.
 
I used the short screws for the pen jaws, loosened those and it’s still jammed. The parts you screw them onto have a little give but the 4th one isn’t moving, no jiggle. This is as far as it was opened when it got jammed (in the photo), so not all the way open but maybe it did skip a tooth? How do I troubleshoot from here? Number 2 is on the left and 4 on the right without attached jaws.

Only used one of them and never had a problem with it… Check for debris and give a light tap to the slide of 4. Not sure if this model comes apart like the other Novas but if does remove the spring clip that holds the backing plate on and can disassemble, clean and inspect the inner workings.

Hey John, I just got back into the chuck that was jammed up by taking the C clamp off and the rest came apart easy after that. I don’t expect you to know how to help me from here but thought I’d ask anyways. I would do it through the PM but wasn’t able to upload photos. Do you think this part of the bearing that appears to be snapped off in the central part of the spiral groove is what is causing the chuck to jam when turning it? The chuck was very clean but blew it out anyways and I didn’t see the metal that flaked off but if I filed this edge down do you think it’ll be okay and start tracking properly on the grooved “teeth”? Would you recommend WD-40 or graphite as lubricant before I re-assemble it? If anybody else has suggestions or experience repairing Nova chucks (midi in this case) it’s greatly appreciated! Yep, that piece in the central part of the grooved bearing was bent over creating a barrier and jamming up the “teeth” from gliding through. Glad I wasn’t trying to force it because it was cutting into the grooves on the teeth and could’ve caused some real damage to them. Filed it down with the smallest dremel diamond coated cone and used some high grit sandpaper to smooth it over. I’ve got it re-assembled and it works like new! Still not sure what the best way to lubricate my chucks is.

Can see where the edge got hung up guessing maybe when opened the chuck to the limit. Glad you got it sorted out with an easy fix. WD40 works well as a lube. Spray the components and wipe them before assembly, put it together, mount on the lathe, put a box over it and spin on high speed to catch any remaining oil spray before using it.

Have a dozen or so chucks, a few bought 20+ years ago and though looking a bit rustic they still work as new. They’re simple in design and if cleaned occasionally will last a lifetime.

Again, glad you figured it out and hope you’re happy with the three of them.
