Just a reminder that I am always looking for curly Koa. Currently I need some CK pepper mill blanks. One would do but more would be better. I'll trade my premium FBE 2 for 1 for premium CK. 3 CK blanks gets 6 FBE blanks back.

Will also consider other species on a 1 to 1 basis but if it's really killer I would trade 2 for 1 for that special piece. I've used all the FBE blanks I want to, I need other species so I need another couple of dozen PM blanks to get to the 50 pepper mill mark which is my goal this time around so I'm digging deep here before I have to go elsewhere and buy blanks. :negative:

Trying to keep the trading/dollars here in our community.

Marblewood? Cocobolo? I also have a piece of what I believe is persimmon with about 50/50 heartwood / sapwood contrast - will make a nice PM. If your interested in any of them let me know and I will get some pics up

I roughed out the only little 3 x 3 x 6" marblewood blank I had for a salt mill and my wife laid claim to it so yes a 12"+ marble wood blank would fit right in to my devious plan. 'Bolo and the mystery persimmon piques my interest also.

Thanks for the offer Scott. If I'm interested in them I'll say so and then you can describe what kind of FBE you want and I will post pics for you if this arrangement works for you. The reason I didn't post pics of wood for offer is because I am willing to custom cut it for anyone who makes peppermill blank offers to me, but they may want something completely different.

:thanx:

Mystery persimmon???? I will wait for Scott and then I will chime back in. 50 peppermills- man i figured you to be a good eater but whoweeeeee. Must be a big table. :rotflmao3::rotflmao3::rotflmao3::rotflmao3::rotflmao3::rotflmao3:

Let's hear some parameters for your mills, Kev... Minimum blank size? I know folks always seem to look for 3" square stock, but that's a little big for me... I like the 2.5" stock better(less waste). What about minimum length? Do you need 12", or would a 6 or 7" blank work in some cases? I've got quite a few mill blanks, but I don't want to bore you with anything that's undersized.

OK - Here we go.

Scott I think it will be a while before Kevin answers- The cocobolo probably made him drool on his keyboard and he is on the way to store right know.
Persimmon my guess is no at lest does not look like anythig I have. When you crosscut is it smooth.

In fact the end of this one is rough- If I use a sawsall-rough cut blade it is smoother.

I like all three. What do you want in return . . . . size wise and quantity?

I can make a pepper or salt mill as short as 5" (needs a 6" to be comfy). I use 3" squares as a standard but nothing goes to waste. I'm still settling in on my favorite profiles but I do have one that a 2.5" blank would work if it was cut true. I have made trades where members have used a chainsaw to cut the blanks and I end up with just a bottle stopper blank at best. They do the best they can not complaining.

The short answer is you won't bore me even if they are too small for my shapes as long as they are 'eye candy' because pepper mills are not my only passion. I turn drumsticks too . . .

How does two nice hollow form or vase blanks sound? Around the size of that last piece would be awesome.

Curly Koa that is greater than 8/4 is tough to get. All the local wood turners, carvers scarf it up fast. I have been trying to get some for PM's for the last several months. I will let you know when something goes down.

That sounds great Scott, as long as they will chuck up on a delta midi lathe - I've turned two hollow form thus far and feel pretty good with it. Which means the next one is gonna frag since I said that. :pleasantry:

:wacko1:

Kevin, I may be out of turn here, but you said 'drumsticks' and caught my interest. my son is on the drum line in high school and I'd love to hear more about the drumsticks you turn, what species you make them from, and even a price if you would be interested in selling a pair. I would love to give my son a set of your custom made drumsticks for Christmas!

Not out of line at all. I turn practice sticks from hickory blanks that I got from JMC. They are actual drumstick blanks that he happened across at an auction and bought them. they make great practice stick and I turn those for my son who plays (I tinker on paint cans etc. in the shop but that's about it anymore). I also turn ornamental sticks from FBE - not a very good wood for playing especially because they break easily.

Also, I freehand them so they aren't matched perfectly. So as long as you know going in you'd be buying a pair of ornamental sticks not for playing I would turn a pair of FBE for you. But I'm not interested in turning any practice sticks - takes too long to get into that more than I do - I just don't have the time.

Oh, ok. thanks for the reply. I'd like to get him a pair made from FBE, but I know him and he'll want to play with them and probably end up breaking them! thanks though!
