Hey all, new guy here. Came over from WWT and have been looking for awhile. Figured I'd post up something and try and strike a deal!

I have some curly maple pen and bottle stopper blanks.

I have twenty seven of the pen blanks at 3/4" square by 5". I'm asking $1.00 each for the pen blanks and would like to sell them in at least five count lots. If these sell, I'll cut more and post more pics.

I have seven of the bottle stopper blanks at 1 7/8" square by 3". I'm asking $2.50 each for the bottle stopper blanks and would like to sell them in at least two count lots. If these sell, I'll cut more and post more pics but my stock at this thickness is very limited. I may be able to cut six or eight more blanks but not positive yet.

This stock is all dry. I dunno if it was kiln dried or air dried but it was dry when I purchased it and it has been stored inside my home for the past year.

Buyer pays actual shipping for items.

I would also be interested in trade offers. Mostly looking for exotics or figured woods in pen blank and other small turning sizes. I understand exotics and figured woods are more valuable and I'm willing to take less wood to make an equal value trade. I'm a new turner so dont hit me with something a novice shouldnt be trying to turn though, lol.

I assume you mean the pen blanks?

Your the first taker so you can take as many as you want. I can cut more, these are just what I currently have on hand and ready. You pay actual shipping so we can do flat rate or whatever is cheaper. I take pay pal or you can send me a money order. I prefer pay pal. wisdom is taking 5 pen blanks. I have 7 stopper blanks and 22 pen blanks left. I can cut a few more stopper blanks and a whole bunchof pen blanks. Let me know what you would like and a zip code and I'll get you a total price. Thanks.
 
I have some exotics, I can try to set you up with a mix small flat rate USPS. Do you have any idea if the stopper blanks will fit in small flat rate? I would like 3 stoppers and fill the rest with pens. Can you do other sizes?

A swap for some exotics sounds great!!

The small flat rate box is supposed to be 1 5/8". The stopper blanks are 1 7/8". If I remember correctly, thier dimensions are a bit conservative so I think they'll fit. I dont actually have one here to check though. I have to go to the post office in the am so I'll pick up some boxes while I'm there.

I realize your exotics are more valuable than my maple. I'll stuff a box tomorrow and let you know how much I got in so you can decide how much of yours is equivilent.

As for different sizes, are you asking if I want different sizes or have differnt sizes than I listed?

JMC, the post office says "if it fits, it ships". I'm gonna try and pull off a "it kinda fits", lol. The box is a little bulgey(is that a word), I think it will be fine. I put the 3 stoppers in and was able to fit 10 pen blanks.

As far as the exotics go, I'm open to most anything. Just nothing thats difficult to turn. I tried some black palm and I'm not to that level yet. As for sizes, I mainly turn pens now, but want to start turning stoppers and other small items so I'd be open to other things than just pen blanks.
 
1. Will 1 1/2" x 5" work for 2 stoppers? If not what is minimum?
2. What is the bare minimum for pens?
I'm actually trying to put some assortment turning packs together for Small USPS flat rate boxes.

Yeah, that would work for a couple small stoppers. Pens are usually 3/4" X 5" but for slim lines you could possibly get away with 1/2" stock. Id be willing to try a couple that size.

That looks great to me!! The only problem I see is that your getting the short end of the deal here.
 
Not really I'll get to offer curly maple for others in some that I may actually sale. Send your info and I'll get it in mail today.

Just because you said that I had to go pick up a piece. Not that I think I'm better than you, I'm very new to this turning stuff as well (since last September) but I figure the best way to learn is to challenge myself.

Having just now only got it fairly round I can see what you're talking about. Turns out that it doesn't look like black palm is actually wood at all - just a loose conglomeration of weedy stems :)

I've an idea that I'm trying out and I'll let you know how it goes. I'm treating it like it is spalty wood, close to marginal. So I'm doing to it what I did to some spalted tamarind that was causing problems - the liberal application of thin CA to stabilize it. It' soaking in and hardening while I type this and catch up on some other stuff.

Your right, its not wood at all. I was turning a pen out of it and the first attempt, the blank exploded just while trying to get it round. The second attempt, I sanded the corners off the blank on the belt sander then when it was on the lathe, I turned it up to about 3200 rpm's and used a really sharp 3/8" spindle guoge with a kinda pointy tip. That seemed to work okay. Be careful with the finish sanding, the black fibers are alot harder than the brown material and you can get a wavy finish.
 
Dennis I got the box today I don't feel scrooged at all thanks again rep is on the way. I'll probably keep the stopper blanks for myself cuz I stopped by the WW store today and got a stopper making kit.

Cool, glad your happy with em. My stopper mandrel just came in the mail over the weekend so I'll be making some too!!
