I aquired a whole truck load of honey locust today. It is currently in large chunk form. I will cut it to whatever dimensions you like but I currently do not have the ability to cut this into small blanks. If you want pen blanks or stopper blanks or other small blanks, you'll have to take a chunk and mill it yourself. I only have a chainsaw but can cut this to fit some medium or large flat rate boxes.

None of it is currently sealed but it was just cut today so it is very green. Tomorrow I plan to cut as much as I can into large blanks and end seal. I allready cut one large 6" X 6" x 12" vase type blank just to see if I could and it didnt turn out too bad. That piece was end sealed with two coats of latex paint.

If your interested, please tell me what sizes you would like so I can cut them tomorrow, otherwise this will all be cut into vase and bowl and peppermill type blanks.

I'm interested in all kinds of wood, especially burly kinds!! I also like various figured woods and of course I'm willing to trade for green backs. If you prefer to buy rather than trade, just make me an offer. I have no idea how to price this stuff as this is my first time selling wood that I cut from log form. As for sizes, I mostly turn pens and stoppers but I am getting into peppermills and bowls very soon so I am open to some small blanks as well as larger ones. Not really interested in flat stock unless its really special.

Most of this has some minor checking near the pith. I should be able to get lots of bowl type and pepermill type blanks that are free of checks. You can see the minor checking in the blank I allready cut.

Heres the one large blank I cut, just to give you an idea of what I'm cutting up here.

Thats the plan with the rest of the blanks. That one was more of a test to even see if I had the ability to cut a somewhat straight line with a chain saw. Worse case scenario, I'll put that one a side and get a couple peppermill blanks out of it later.

I'm also going to look into another way to seal rather than paint. Either wax or anchor seal.

I would highly recommend anchor seal. I use it quite often and rarely have any issues with checking.

I agree................anchor seal is the only way to go..................I'd be interested in peppermill and vase blanks IF you want to sell some rather than trade..........Jimmy

Okay guys, this trade needs to go on hold for awhile. I'm wasting way too much wood trying to cut blanks with a chain saw. I cut a peppermill blank for myself yesterday and wasted at least another peppermills worth trying to cut it. I'm going to be placing an order for a Grizzly band saw in the next week or so hopefully so I'll be able to cut chunks and then process them into blanks on the bandsaw.

Jimmy, yes, I'm willing to sell as well. I have no idea how to price this as I have never sold wood before and I dont know the value of honey locust. The value isnt important though because I have way more than I'm ever going to use and I'm not looking to make a bunch of money on it. I only want 6 or 8 peppermill blanks and a couple bowl blanks for myself and the rest can go. I'm just gonna take offers and no reasonable offer will be refused.

I'll update this thread when I get the saw and we will continue to try and make deals then and Jimmy, you will be first in line if your still interested at that point.

Thanks guys.

Does it split well? If it does it seems you could have a temporary solution til you get a bandsaw. With a mall and a couple of good wedges with the logs being so short I don't really see you getting near the waste as with the chainsaw.

I dunno. I havnt tried to split any. I dont own a maul, any wedges or a sledge. I couldnt swing any of those right now with my back issues anyhow. I had to keep taking breaks while trying to cut it with the chainsaw. I've been wanting a bandsaw for awhile anyhow so now I have a legitimate excuse.

I'm going to order a Grizzly 14" with a riser block. I wont be able to mill logs or whole chunks with it but I can at least 1/4 them with the chain saw and then mill those chunks on the band saw. With the riser block, its suppose to handle 12" cuts but I dont want to burn it up so I'll just use it to process smaller chunks untill I can afford a mill.

i have a 14 in rikon and have no issues with cutting logs on it! you just have to have the right blade on there. I am interested in some of this timber, pref bowl blanks or pepper mill blanks. I can send you a pic of the sled i made for sawing logs up if you would like. goes right into the miter slot, cuts like a champ

No problem, I'll get you taken care of as soon as I get my band saw ordered.

I had a Grizzly TS that was defective, I sent it back and they want me to upgrade. Well, I dont have the additional $500 for the upgrade so they reccomended a refund rather than replacement because the problem I had is a common problem with that model. Since I started turning, I havnt even used my TS so I'm going to order a band saw with my refund and buy a used TS when one comes available for when I actually need to rip something. The refund is enough that I could acctually get a 2hp 17" band saw and I'm really considering it rather than a 14" 1 hp saw. I dunno though.

BD, what is the HP on your Rikon? Do you use a risor block? I think the 14" may be fine but I dont want to get one and burn it up either.

its a 1.5 hp and have had it for over 2 years now. hooked up to 240v, you can use it at 110 but recommend hooking it up at 240 it will last a lot longer, a saw that size, will last a long time. i cut from around 12 inch longs, slowly but it def gets the job done. if you are cutting GREEN timber you have to get a blade designed for cutting green timber, well worth it and you can use them on dry timber as well. My bandsaw is my go to tool in the shop, for me that is for what i do. i am sure you won't be disappointed with a large bandsaw. they come in handy in so many ways. from cutting thin stock to ripping large pieces, well worth the price if you can subsidize the cost. my bandsaw has already paid for itself. I have a max cutting depth of 13.25 in which is large enough for the pieces i am resawing!

they make an 18 inch but the price goes up. i spent a little under a grand for mine, got it on sale. i can def send you plans on how to make a sled for cutting logs on a bandsaw, very easy to create, and very cheap as well

Okay guys, my band saw showed up today. I got it all together and adjusted and its ready to eat some wood!!! Bad news is, the riser block I ordered for it wont be in stock till Aug. Thats what I get for ordering a new model machine.

Untill Aug, I am limited to a cutting capacity of 6". If you have any requests for bowl blanks, PM blanks, stoppers or anything else 6" or less, lemme know. I'll be cutting this week in the evenings after work.

If you would like larger stock, lemme know as well so I can set some material aside. Otherwise, I'm going to cut all this up to clear my garage for more wood!!

I also have Catalpa that I'll be cutting. I'll post it in another thread when its available.

I'm interested in trade or sale. My wood interests are anything burly or figured in the form of peppermills and such. I could also use some smallish(6" or less) bowl blanks. I'm attempting to learn bowls now.

Also, I dont have any anchor seal or wax so I'm sealing with a couple coats of latex. I have a couple of PM blanks I cut for myself a month ago that I sealed with latex and they havnt cracked so I think its okay.

I think I named this place wrongly. Should have been "Woodhoarders Who Love Fugly Gnarly Wood. "Dot Commmmmmmmmmm!"

Could you possibly send a copy of your sled or post it on this forum, please?

Dennis, I'd be interested in trade. I can send you Texas mesquite and if the trade goes well later swap other woods as well. I am interested in bowl blanks and BS and PM balnks. Let me know if this works. I try to post pic.s of some of my bowls in Mesquite for you. Once I up date my profile.

for posting to threads.webp

Yep, I can go for some mesquite, I dont have any.

I'm interested in the same type of blanks, PM, BS, smallish bowls.

I'm limited to the size I can mill right now. Will 6 x 6 x 3 bowl blanks work?

Let me know how many of each blank you would like and I'll get them cut up. Ive been milling Catalpa instead of Honey Locust but plan to start on it this evening or Wed evening.

Do we have an "old crotchety forester wont stop trying to hijack my thread" smiley?

Just a momentary entertaining diversion.:davidguil:

No, because since :cof: hijacks all threads it's impossible to make such a smiley. His strategy is flawless. He may be crazy but he isn't stoooopid.

:wacko3:

Really, I love ya Bob don't go off on me :davidguil: made me do it.

:wasntme:

Hell we are all crazy or we would not be here so if Bob was not crazy he would not fit. At least I hope I am crazy otherwise I have to come up with a better excuse for havin all this wood........................:teethlaugh::teethlaugh::teethlaugh:
