This is not a real name for Redwood Burl, just a common name amongst the redwood guys so we all know what we are talking about. The more common pin burl will have little points poking outward on the outer surface of the burl. That type of burl shows eyes when cut up. This type of burl has indentations going inward instead. Instead of eyes there are numerous small bark pockets throughout the burl with some subtle figure in between.
This is old stock redwood. I bought it from a guy who had inherited it from his grandfather. The wood will be much darker when finished. In the last photo I did a light spray of lacquer in one spot to give a better idea. It also shows one of the ends with the inverted pins. This is not the normal orangeish, it will look dark red with almost black at the bark pockets when finished.
The width/thickness is a bit over 2 inches squared.
This wood did not work out for what I intended (knife handles) because of the bark pockets. It might be good for one of your projects or it could be a fun pieces to add to a wood collection. It is an uncommon oddity. I am not sure how rare it might be, but I am where the redwoods are and we don't see this type of redwood burl very often.
What I would like on trade is something I can cut up for knife handle materials. Just something with a lot of drama in a small area. I need to yield pieces about 5"+ x 2" x 1&1/4" without flaws.
