The boss has me looking for a new rolling dowel. Even edge from end to end(no taper). 18"-20" long and 2.25"-3" diameter. She wants maple but I'm open to other woods, especially if they have darker color or some nice figure. Most everyone here knows what I have to trade, which is a lot of Russian olive burl pen and knife block sized blanks(not yet dry). I also have apple and white spalted apple sitting around if you're looking for some larger turning blocks.

Norm, can the maple be laminated? If so, I've got some hard maple (non-figured) that I could laminate and get those dimensions. I actually have a rolling pin with similar dimensions and no taper that I made for my wife from a lamination of hard maple, but it's heavy and a beast to use, so often I'm the one assigned to use it for her, lol.

I think laminated will work just fine. I was half tempted to laminate some maple I have here to include in trade as the material to turn. Pm me and we'll talk about a trade.

Here's a set I finished recently for my mother-in-law. This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but it's the only picture I have handy of a couple of the handful of rolling pins I've made.

Tapered rolling pin of Curly Bigleaf Maple, about 1 1/4" in the center section, tapering to about 7/8" on the ends.

Small, straight rolling pin of Quilted Maple, about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" - a special request to help with rolling out items inside of a sheet tray.

Don't any figured maple near large enough, or even large enough to laminate, for the kind of rolling pin your wife is wanting, lol.

That smaller one is exactly what I'm looking for, just bigger. Lol! The boss said 19" and straight.

If @Sprung doesn't get you taken care of let me know. I might have a dowel pin laying around about that size. :drinks:
I might need another some time but he's got me covered. Thanks though! If you're looking for hairpin material, I still have lots of that apple from the bowl and some other apple as well.

Norm, got a chance to finish this up this evening. Before I take it off the lathe and cut it down to length, I just wanted to double check with you on size. I've got it at 2 1/2" diameter. It's all sanded, save for one final hand sanding after raising the grain on it that I'll do when it's dry. Wanted to double check on the length. Your wife was looking for 19" long, correct? If she wants it a little longer than that, I can get up to about 21 1/2" to 22" from this when I trim it to length to square the ends and remove the marks from the centers. Once I know for certain what length she would like, I'll get it finished up. Thanks!

Thanks! 19" it is! Just wanted to double check on the length before going any further - want to make sure the boss is happy!

That 3rd one from the bottom is really cool looking, it hard gluing that up @pvwoodcrafts I've only made one for my mother in law, how do you go about making sure the whole thing is nice and flat across the rolling part? My rest is only 12" i think so it was tough getting it perfect for some reason.

Thats the toughest one . Need to glue up 30 Pieces at one time and get glue joints all tight. I have a 12 in rest too. I make the flats 12 in and doesn't seem too bad to get them flat, but I've probably made 500 of them. Practice helps I guess
