I received this slice of Hemlock (?) from a fellow penturner. I keep looking at and thinking there may be something better in it other than pens, but I don't know what that is. It is approx. 19" across and 6" thick and dry. I don't know the MC.

I am looking for ideas and possible trades.

Thank you, Karl

Karl, I moved this out of the recent finds area because if you want input/info/trade offers people can reply to this topic here. However noone can reply in the recent finds area, not even the person who starts the topic.

But If you'd like I can move it back. Up to you...

Thanks for the help. I will go with your suggestion. I am looking for people to respond with ideas and/ or interest.

I don't know anything about hemlock, but that looks like ERC to me. Would make a nice table.

It did not smell like cedar, but I did not make a fresh cut to test.

Take a sander to the bottom of it and if it turns pink-ish or purple or a mix thereof and smells like a cedar chest .....

Karl, I have a piece of Eastern Red Cedar that looks very similar to that with the 'column' like projections, though not as deep as yours. I've already figured out what I want to do with mine and it would work for yours also.
My thought is to minimally turn about the center 1/3 of the piece on the lathe, then attack it with a set of King Arthur Lancelot tools, manually carving out scalloped regions where the 'columns' are, that would then lay over like petals...or something like that.

Hit that baby with a plane or a belt sander and smell it. Also I would love to see a picture of it smoothed out a little. It would make a little table that would be out of this world!!!!!!!:wacko::wacko::wacko:

Tried the sander to scratch surface. No purple or red. Some aroma, but not ERC type of aromatic.

It doesn't look like the Hemlock I've been working with for one of my customers but I have to agree it would make a cool table top.

It does look like the Hemlock around here. Hem;rock has always split like crazy only drying it. It polishes up really nicely.

It's your everyday tabletop wood species. There are many types of ttw, but that one is one of the best I have seen in at least a few weeks.

Sounds like maybe a table top would be a good project...If it was filleted, it would make at least 2 nice tables. I didn't want to cut it for pen blanks.
Anyone interested in it for a table project?

I like the table idea. Since its 6" thick, you can get at least 2 out of it. Will look great with some contrasting bowties in all the little checks.

I see a 5 leaf clover hanging over a pint of Harp with a shot of McGregor off to one side by the dusty payphone just left of the rough cut and hand honed bar.

Mark....
