Hoping to trade these ROB knife blocks for some steel of around the same value. 2nd block is stabilized, all others are not. Dimentions are written on each piece. Looking for minimum width of 1-1/2" and minimum length of 8". Thickness anywhere between 1/16" up to 1/4". I'd prefer A2, D2, 440C or any other high carbon(1%+) or stainless steels(chromium 13%+). 20151227_213927.webp 20151227_213953.webp 20151227_214015.webp 20151227_214036.webp

I hope nobody is holding back because of me on this one. The thinnest A2 I can find in the drop pile is 3/16"X1-1/4" .
That would still take some serious grinding to bring it down to the right thickness unless I threw it in the mill at work and decked it down.
I work with 440C but it is all in bigger blocks that are prehardened to around 40 to 45 Rc.

Pop's Knife has a good price on CPM154CM.
We do some work with Jarosz Knives and Jessie was telling us a while back that 5 years ago CPM was darn good stuff but in the last couple of years he has really seen the quality drop off. He has been finding voids in the material so has quit using it pretty much.
I am not saying it is junk but beware. This guy makes quite a few high dollar knives.

Niagara Special Metals now own Crushable Steel, not saying they are the problem but they took over about 5 yrs. ago. This quality control problem happened once before and that is why Bob Loveless went to Hatachi in Japan and helped them develop ATS34. Now Hatachi has priced ATS34 out of the market so it looks everything has gone full circle.

Other problems with that steel, is it is not annealed enough and it is harder to grind. then the steel is hot rolled and descaled causing it to have a rough over sized surface which has to be flat ground down to size.

Please don't trouble yourself with machining it down for me. Main reason I'm looking for a2 and d2 are ease of tempering.
