I have been bugging Daren for YEARS (literally ... it started on the other forum) to give/sell/trade/whatever some of that excellent redbud of that he has that I keep stealing pics of but never had any up close an personal.

Imagine my surprise to find a large Flat Rate box on my doorstep this afternoon, that my wife couldn't lift. Here's a first-cut pic of the haul.

Thank you Daren, thank you, thank you. Please let me know what I can send in return. Look here to see what I've got on the forum:

And thanks for remembering the walnut pieces and thanks for the cherry.

By the way, I should point out to everyone that Daren is a Master Packer for sure. I don't think I could have put ANYTHING else in that box except in the tiny space left by the curved edges of the irregular pieces. '

So, Kevin, what's with the Fuzzy Gorilla and the pink tutus???

The cherry was just a ''box filler''...That is why it took 3 years for you to get it...It took me that long to figure out the puzzle of a FULL box.

Glad you like it. I am surprised you got it already (well minus the 3 years Part) I sent it just before the PO closed Thursday. I was going to send you a pm later today to be expecting it midweek.

Thanks again. I have a suggestion for a trade back. I have this piece of shedua that, like the bloodwood piece I just traded to Kevin, I just could never bring myself to cut up for my bowls. I really like using shedua in the bowls --- check this out:

The stuff can really shine. If you don't have any use for it, maybe get your dad to do one of his fantastic pieces w/ it.

Anyway, just let me know if you want it. Here is is on both sides. It's 3/4" thick.

Did Daren include that picture in the box!!!

I'll get you for this Daren you swore you'd never show that to anyone! :diablo:

Never heard of Shedua looks like Walnut. Really pretty stuff.

I had never heard of shedua either, I had to go to hobbithouse to investigate and see more pictures. :i_dunno:
That is a nice piece of wood Paul, not sure I could bring myself to cut it up either (and as far as dad, hey he's got wood, he can trade for his own darn self :sarcastic: He is a silent member here)
That box I sent was a gift really, for helping out here and for the 100's of times I have been to your personal site using it to help me ID wood (and just look to be looking at all the pretty stuff)
I may hit you up for a small box of veneer in the future though...Seeing your pictures you don't seem to have a shortage of it. :shok:

Thanks Daren. Any time you need veneer, just let me know.

Wow! That redbud is really beautiful! Never seem to see any with much girth here in N. Indiana. Maybe I should start looking harder. Got any furniture you have made out of redbud? Is it hard to work with?

They don't get very big, and they are always hollow and crooked...so they are hard to get ''lumber'' from. Once milled and dried the wood is not hard to work with, quite nice actually...but the milling and drying process is no fun. Small hollow trees that contain internal stress (the wood likes to move as it is drying) yield smaller pieces to work with...But yes I have made things from redbud, a table top and several smaller things like bowls and hand planes. I am replying from my phone so I cannot post pictures (that are saved on my laptop/disk) at the moment, but I will lizardlady.

.

Looks like it would work up just gorgeous! I guess it must quit being finicky when it actually IS dry (or thereabouts). Tabletops & planes are 2 things you just don't want to spontaneously explode, lol. Looking forward to those pictures whenever you get the time
