Hi all. I posted a thread about how to cut up this Red Amboyna burl and it was suggested I offer it for sale as is.

This Amboyna slab is 28” long x 9” to 13” wide x 3.5” max thickness and weighs 32 pounds. Moisture is less than 6%.

I am asking $550 plus shipping ($17/pound). Based on a recent burl shipment of similar weight from Colorado to FL, I am guessing shipping to the east coast would be $85 UPS.

My thinking for pricing justification is that for pen blanks, using a 60% yield I would get 120 blanks at perhaps $8/each. Of course, that takes labor and marketing to move that many. (Estimate made via weight.)

Feel free to ask questions, and if you have other ideas there’s a thread in Processing to weigh in. Thanks! 🙏🏻

@Johnlee can you PM me your zip code so I can check shipping costs? My thought is to meet you half way, but I want to check shipping costs before I commit to that counteroffer. Thanks 🙏🏻

PM sent. Counteroffer of $516 shipped.

I will snap a few more pictures this afternoon and get them posted just so you can see the burl and all of its beauty and warts.

A whole bunch more pictures attached.

I never studied the burl in this detail but I did some digging and pealed away thin layers of bark and wood to reveal an air pocket on the backside. Eyeballing down into the hole it looks like the backside of a regular burl, with all of the poky bits (technical term). So the angle section on the backside looks like more regular grain wood than burl.
Burl wood is always a bit of a mystery until you start processing.

I rechecked the weight at 32 pounds 1.6 oz. So voids or not, the burl is pretty hefty.

Full disclosure 😊

Eric

After my inspections of this burl yesterday I began to wonder about the internal structure. After chatting with @Johnlee I decided to perform surgery and sort out the long bark inclusion.

It turned out as I expected where the burl cap had bark on it and the tree grew around the burl covering over a portion but leaving some internal voids as well. I removed all of the bark inclusion and shaved off 1.5 lbs. On the backside, you can see the burl cap poking through the opened up area. Short of doing a lot of resin casting, I don’t think my burl surgery changed the usability very much. The bark inclusion was pretty large.

I have two more Amboyna burls, one Red Amboyna slightly smaller than this one and a Golden Amboyna.

I am not positive I will sell the other red Amboyna. But I do want to sell one of the two and this one was my preference.

I had some big red amboyna caps. Messing around with a hole. In the hole was 75% of a tiny egg shell. I thought for a bit it was a humming bird egg. Then it dawned on me. It was a snake egg. Uggghhh
