Yesterday I went to my friends tree service wood pile and pulled out three pieces of spalted birch. One of them is a crown piece where three branched come together. I am not sure how to cut this wood for the best use :help:. Is it worth anything? I imagine a bowl could be turned out of the crown, but I don't do that type of lathe work.

Thoughts?:help:

Neat stuff! That three way piece in the second photo is interesting. I would probably cut it through the two main piths and ignore that smaller branch further down. My experience(limited) has been that the best crotch figure comes from symmetric crotches with an angle between the branches somewhere around 60 degrees. Much smaller angles tend to yield large bark inclusions while much larger angles yield less impressive figure. I'm not a sawyer, so I'm interested to hear what the experts say about cutting crotches.
