Personally, 12"sq, 4-6" deep is my current upper limit, but have found that if you base the size on what'll fit in a flat-rate box, you win!:yes:

We're suckers for a box o' wood!:clapping:

I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect size. The flat rate boxes are appealing as they're generally cheaper than other options… Not always, but generally.

I find few people who are able or interested in turning blanks over twenty inches in diameter… Even at that size, platter blanks at 2-3" thick are probably for a limited number of folks. Bowls over 15 or 16 inches in diameter have a fairly limited market for sales, and most folks stay under 14" for a standard salad bowl. I tend to look for 12" blanks due to the shipping costs mentioned above.

You'll find some interest in 3x3x12" spindle blanks for pepper mills. Pieces in the 2x2x6 inch range are good for stoppers and game calls. 1x1x6" blanks are a great rough size for pens. Typically as the pieces get smaller, the board foot price seems to go up, but you'll also see folks being quite a bit pickier about the density/amount of figure in those smaller pieces.

Looking forward to seeing what you've got available once you get to cutting and sealing the blanks.

thanks for the info dkmd as soon as my yard drys up a bit ill have this guy with his sawmizer get in here and get busy. the logger had to pull out in january it got sloppy never did freeze up or they would all been milled by now . cant wait to see whats inside . dave

thanks greg im working nights right now so im going to get some flat rate boxes today . waiting for this water to dry up back there i might cut some smaller logs up that i can carry out dont know if them laying out there is good or not ? and have my buddy saw up in blanks for sealing. maybe cut up some cookies. thanks dave

nothing wrong with being a wood sucker lol thanks for the info ill be getting at as soon as it drys up back there a bit looks like good weather this week im crossing my fingers thanks dave
 
Looks like you found a good lot there! Going to be in the Medina area for a Geocaching event in a few weeks, would be interested in stopping in and possibly trading some dead presidents for a few pieces if you are interested.

no probelm curtis just let me know what day and ill be here and give you the directions. will you be here on a weekend ? i work swing shift right know medinas maybe 20 miles from me. be glad to show you some got plenty. thanks dave
 
do you own a bandsaw, thats how i take all of my logs and cut them up into chunks or boards. you can also use your chainsaw, make a simple jig to hold the log in place and cut it up. cutting length wise will eat your chains up if the teeth aren't cut to a 10 degree but if you have multiple blades you should be fine!

hi browndown no im going to get one sometime. i going to cut them into moveable lengths soon and get them to a mill here . said hes going to cut the big ones into slabs the rest into sellable stock sizes for turning he is charging me only 50.00 if i help him he has a sawmizer. he is a turner too and is a good old dude . thanks dave

I'll be very eager to see photos if you get some nice, figured flats, which I'm sure you will! The wood will be used for frames so it doesn't have to be of a significant length or quantity.....12" or a bit longer will work. Thank you!

will do i have a lot. many diffrent figureing patterns . i love that ambrosia frame with the acorns but there all great beutiful dave
 
don't mill them all. I would be interested in rounds 14-18 in diameter about 30 in long.Less work for you.
They would have to be shipped but I just checked with unishippers and they are reasonable.If you have a price let me know,or I could let you know what logs usually cost me
