This piece was cut from a side burl on a standing dead Western Big Leaf Maple. I gave it a quick sanding at 120 grit and sprayed it with a light surface coat of lacquer to give a better idea of the figure and coloring.
The photos make it look a little orange-er than real life. The background is a gold-ish orange a shade or two lighter than the photos. The eyes are a red/orange. The 4th and 5th photos are a better representation of the true coloring. This piece is almost flawless, just a couple super fine shallow hairline checks on the cut edge. It was dry, but is now just a little damp from being stored in a covered outdoor area.
The size is about 11"+ long x 7" wide x 2&1/4" thick at the furthest points.
It is nicer than the photos make it appear. This is a side burl so the figure will be most dramatic at the natural edge fading a bit as it gets to the cut edge. The coloring comes from standing dead for a number of years.
I would like to get something unusual that I can cut into knife handle blocks. I need to yield pieces 5"+ long x 2" wide and 1&1/4" thick (doesn't have to be this size, that is just the size I need to be able to cut some of) with lots of drama and no flaws. The more unusual, the better.
