I have one piece of highly figured tiger maple 24 5/8" x 9.75" x 1 1/8" for trade or to sell. It has slight cupping and the end is a little rough, but you should be able to plane it down to 24" x 9.75" x 1" without any problem. I picked this piece up from Hearne Hardwood because it has a nice consistent flame pattern. I'm not sure how they dried it, but it has been acclimated indoors for over a year.

Now that I've been collecting more wood species, it is a little too highly figured for my taste, i.e. I've gotten too lazy to hand plane this type of wood.

Full wood list - some pieces too big to ship unless you can pickup in the Philly area. If anything interests you, I'll take pictures and post it for trade.

I'm interested in this piece of wood. I have 80 b/f of spalted maple boards for trade. They are mostly 6-8 inches and 9 feet long. If you are interested in those, I'll post pictures. If not, would you sell the tiger maple outright?

Yes, I'd be very interested in the spalted maple. I might even be interested in all of it depending on quality/price. We might be able to agree upon a trade+sale like I did with a marblewood pieces for zebrawood. Could you please post pictures? I would really prefer a trade to selling the maple.

Here's a couple of pictures of the maple. Let me know if these are not to your liking and I can take some more.

Very nice. How thick are the boards? Are they dried? Could you take a picture showing the faces of all the boards? Maybe a second photo of the flip sides? Are you interested in trading more than a single board?

Thank you,
Mark

I milled the boards to 3/4' thickness with a dewalt planer. The boards coming out of this planer usually measure about .755 inches on a digital caliper. They are very dry as they have been milled down and packed tight in my garage for one year. I bought them when the measured 20%, but will take my moister meter and get a new reading for you. I will trade all of the maple that we can agree upon. My thought is that the tiger maple you have is probably worth 3 or 4 of the widest boards of this spalted maple. If you need me to mill the maple to a specific cut list (for cheaper shipping), I can do that too. Can you be more specific with what kind of pics that you want? I want to provide you exactly what you need to look at. For now, I will go and take a pic of the lot of boards on one side, flip them and shoot the other side. I will post the pics shortly.

Great, you don't need to measure the moisture - I just wanted to know if it was green. I just wanted to get a general feel for the quality of the spalting, so I'd like to see the faces of all the boards. Closeups aren't necessary. I'm sure the boards are weaker in some spots due to the spalting, so I want to get a feel for how much stabilization I'll have to do or waste wood there might be. I'll be able to guess if I can just see the boards spread out.

I'm not sure what the longest length you can economically ship is, but I'm guessing 1/2 of the average board would be about 4'? So if you cut each board to 4' that would be ok, but I'd like to get the longest set of 1/2 the boards possible, realizing the other half will be cutoffs of various lengths.

Trading the tiger maple for 3 of the widest boards seems more than fair, and I'll let you know once I see the pictures of the faces whether I want all of the boards or most of them.

Ok, it had to be 2 pics and I only took one side. I also measured the moisture, which adjusted for temp turns out to be between 10 and 11 %...because it's like 50 degrees in the garage right now. Let me know which boards you want and I'll cull them out and get both sides of them in a picutre.[attachment=876][attachment=877][attachment=878]

Yes, I'd be interested in all of it. I really appreciate your taking the time to take these photographs. It mostly looks like interesting stock to work with, so I don't see any need to cull out the runts. Would you take $120 + the tiger maple for it?

I'm kind of a noob when it comes to shipping wood. I'm gussing from the forun that the wood must be cut into 4 foot sections and palletized. I also think that the shipping can get fairly expensive. $120 and the tiger maple is fair as long as we can agree on shipping. What shipper should I get a quote from? Can you help with this?

Well, the last trade of 15 boards, it was boxed up and sent parcel post. That was $35 for shipping, but this may be heavier - I'm not sure, so I'd start by getting a weight. I was figuring $40 of that would be difference in shipping between yours and mine. Its $14.95 for me to ship the tiger maple flat-rate priority mail.

So, you can can plug the weight into www.usps.gov and check the parcel shipping rate to 19002. And if the price isn't good, ups and fedex have calculators or maybe Mailboxes Etc would help package it. I don't think it's enough wood to go freight, although I've done that also. Usually that is better with a couple hundred BF. There is a forum category with shipping information on this site where they give a hyperlink for getting freight shipping quotes, but let's see if we can avoid that. Try this

If ultimately, its too much to ship, let me know what you can ship and we'll see what we can agree upon. Or let me know the weight, and I'll do my best to help research the shipping. There's no rush on this; so whenever you can weigh it is fine; I'd just like to make a trade.

Ok, freight quote says the cheapest shipping they offer will be 167.88 and that's if you pick it up in Westchester.

I estimate the wood at 225 pounds. Well, 5.5 b/f weighed 17 pounds. There is like 72 b/f. I'll check other options and let you know what I find. The ship from address is 27560.

Ok, I'll do some digging. Maybe splitting it into 3 shipments under 70lbs would be more economical with UPS. And if we can figure where the sweet spot is on shipping, we can tailor down the trade to that size, e.g. if 150lbs is a good deal, then we'll leave a few boards off.

How about this, we can do a true trade and I'll pay for the shipping of the tiger maple whilst you pay for the shipping of the spalted maple. The spalted maple is too heavy for usps, so the best option is to ship it outrigt with the shipper. I can call yellow freight and get a quote to, just to compare...they are local. So, send me no money, just pay for the shipment of the spalted maple when it arrives. I'll pay for the tiger maple when it arrives, deal?

I guess I would have to find the packing materials and all, but I can do multiple shipments via UPS if it is cheaper.

I just calculated the shipping and parcel post is not available for the weight. Regular priority mail is 50.05$ for 70 pounds. Looks like the best option is freight.

For a 70lb box that is 12" x 12" x 48", parcel post between our zips is $33.61 (under Other Options). So that's $100 for 3 of them.
UPS is $41.63 each

I'm pretty sure freight will be over $100, but see what you can turn up. I don't need residential delivery, I have a truck and can pick up from the depot.

As far as packing, just immobilize the wood in some kind of heavy corrugated cardboard that won't puncture when the wood shifts; otherwise, its wood, you don't have to bubble wrap it.

I appreciate your offer for a true trade, but it hardly seems fair to you. That quantity of spalted wood is more valuable than one board of tiger maple even if shipping is involved. So I'd like to find a way to ship so you get the best possible deal.

USPS did not like my package size. I put a bigger one in. Yes, 12" x 12 " x 48 " is 33.81. I will make 3 packages of this size and ship them to you. I will send you a private email with my phone number so that we can finalize the details.

It was nice talking with you on the phone. I'm glad we were able to work out the details. It's good to know that 12 x 12 x 60 is still 33.81 via parcel post, since I appreciate your cutting it to 4 1/2' to keep the boards as long as possible.

To recap our deal: I'm sending you $120 via paypal, and then you'll ship the spalted maple. And as soon as I get it, I'll ship you the tiger maple via priority mail.

Ok, it had to be 2 pics and I only took one side. I also measured the moisture, which adjusted for temp turns out to be between 10 and 11 %...because it's like 50 degrees in the garage right now. Let me know which boards you want and I'll cull them out and get both sides of them in a picutre.

I was able to get to the PO before noon and the wood got shipped today! The total shipping was $97, so we estimated pretty good. There are 3 packages, 69, 67, and 58 pounds on their way to you.
