@Wildthings and I are entering into a trade. Barry saw where I had asked @Molokai to make me a couple of sheaths for my @robert flynt / @Packardknives Persian pair and offered to make one of them. I indicated I didn't want to crawfish on Tom but that I had something near and dear to my heart that could use a sheath. In 1969 my dad was transiting through the P.I. to retrieve some shot up helos from Nam to bring back to Atsugi Japan for major work, and when he came back home he handed me this (my mom freaked out but dad said it was time his son owned a real knife - eat your heart out Crocodile Dundee lol) . . .

Look at all the pen blanks in that ebony (?) handle. :shok:

It came with a sheath but I wore it out many moons ago and eventually lost track of it. When I was in my early teens I use to actually wear this on my waist and walk down the street with it to go play with my buddies when we lived in Corpus Christi. I know for certain I wore this thing dozens of times on my way to a chinaberry fight or something or just to play cowboys and indians, and there were bound to be cops that passed me on the street. They obviously figured it had to be a toy. :sarcastic:

Like Tom said, Barry says he just wants to make the sheath for gratis. But like Tom, Barry is going to get wood and/or whatnot in return. Barry it measures 18.5" overall and the blade is 11.5 inches. So, are you game?

Absolutely I'm game!! That is one cool macheté and love the patina on it. So for the WBites like me P. I. stand for Philippine Islands not poison ivy in this case at least! Some great memories with that blade thanks for sharing them and for letting me be a part of it!!

Okay Barry thanks for taking it on. What kind of replica do you need of it. I mean, how accurate does it need to be . . . does the blade need to be matched on all dimensions? That would take forever for me it would be like makng another one. Or can I just make the outline in wood? I can do that easy. I can't send the knife because obviously it means to much to me to risk it getting lost by the USPS.

Make an outline of the entire knife on a piece of cardboard. Also get me thicknesses of the blade in about 3 places - right at the guard, about 1/2 way down and about 1/2" up from tip

Kevin, He can probably get by if you trace the blade on a piece of poster paper and give him the thickness of the blade. Sorry, didn't see he had posted a reply already.

It's a wonder your mama didn't hid it and make you think you had lost it. That big bowie it a wonder it didn't pull your pants down. you must have had a good belt.

Barry - I turned the knife on its spine and traced it next to the outline, then mic'd the spine and recorded the thicknesses. Then the widths of the blade. The outline was kind of fuzzy so I figured the actual measurements might help you. Will this work?

Just read this thread, great story Kevin! I can see why that knife is special to you; I have a few knives my Dad gave me growing up as well.

P.S. Just as a FYI, Dad taught me to always give money to anybody who gives you a knife. Bad luck not to, and it has to be silver. TA

We need a Great Idea! icon . . . .

That's one of the great things about this particular forum is the ability to add those icons to a thread. OH and the people of course
