@Fret440 posted this pic in another thread of some very nice cutoffs he's got. If Jacob's still up for trading them away, I'd be making a pen or two (or a pen and something else) to send his way. If that works for you, Jacob, let me know and I'll get my address to you. I could even pick up the shipping to get these pieces to me, if you want.

A pen would be cool, or if you feel up to it... I could use 6 violin pegs. I can provide the wood and a peg to copy. Of course for the work that six pegs would be, I'd send a bigger box with a surprise or two. I need to get you better pics...in the morning.

Jacob, turning those pegs could be a serious challenge, but they could also be a good skill builder for me as I am very new to turning. I would definitely want to see pics and find out a little bit about making violin pegs before I'd commit to making them to make sure I wouldn't be getting in over my head. (And I would probably churn out a couple dozen practice pieces first, lol!)

Okay, then I'll post a pic of one and let you decide what you want to do. Here's some more pics of the wood. I can get all but one piece of walnut and the maple sticks in a MFRB.

Here's a violin peg. If you don't feel comfortable with making any of these, 1-2 pens would be great.

Jacob, I think it would be good for me to pass on trying to make a set of violin pegs. I could probably get the peg part just fine, but the detail work right below the button is beyond my current skillset, and also a little uncertain as to how to flatten the two sides of the button, with that nice bit of curve to it. I have an idea on how to flatten the sides of the button, and Les (Blueglass) PM'ed me and said he could get me some pointers from his dad on making the pegs if I took on the challenge, but I simply do not feel confident in my abilities to produce a set of these at this time. And when I'm not confident in my abilities to do something, that is when I usually prove myself right and royally mess things up or waste a lot of material.

If you still want to trade for a pen or two, I would definitely still be game for that!

(And there's those toes again! You're a master at this toe shot thing!)

That's cool. A pen or two would be fantastic. Are you good with all the ziricote and as much curly walnut as I can get in, or do you want some of the ambrosia maple sticks?

Yeah, I'd be good with the ziricote and whatever curly walnut you can get in there. Duck's got me stocked with a good amount of his ambrosia maple right now.

I'll PM you my address!

@Fret440 I can't promise anything, but I can talk to my dad about making some pegs for you. He makes violins and makes all his own parts. How many do you want and what would you want them made out of. I would just be the broker in between as Dad will not touch a computer. He does like timber though.

I have some DIW and / or mesquite that might be good for them. I would need six. Look into it and see what he says. It would be a lot of work when I know I can buy ebony pegs for about 2.50 each. Would be neat to have them out of something else. Will have to see what I could part with.

@Fret440 - Jacob, here's what I've got for you so far. The pen is from the Ziricote you sent me on a Chrome and Black Sierra kit. My crappy cell phone pic shows it as simply being black, but when you look at in person, you can actually see the grain, as well as the quartersawn figure on the two sides. The bottle opener is the Curly Walnut one I posted previously.

I still want to make a pen out of the Curly Walnut for you. Unfortunately I have two failed attempts so far - one blank that blew up on me (probably user error) and another user error that involved me putting the bushings in the wrong order. The blank finished beautifully and I didn't realize my mistake until I went to assemble it last night. Doh! Hoping the third time's the charm and that I'll have a package headed your way as soon as I get a chance to get a pen made for you from the curly walnut!

@Fret440

Jacob, I finally got a pen from the Curly Walnut without experiencing another user error!

Here's a shot of everything together. Bottle Opener in Curly Walnut, Slimline Pen in Curly Walnut, Sierra Pen in Ziricote.

If you like what you see, I'll get this in the mail to you this week! Thanks again for the trade!

Matt, they look great! I hope you didn't burn through too much of that walnut trying to get one pen for me! I do appreciate the time and effort!

Just a couple small pieces since it doesn't take a lot to make a pen - well over 90% of the walnut left! Just a couple user errors that I learned from! I'll get these items in the mail sometime this week!
