I envy you living out there. i was once a pro. beach bum--water skier--surfer. if i was to make 1 trip out there, where should we go. we like the backroads--no neon lights probably like you.
You would like Kaua'i. It is the most rural of the islands(except for Moloka'i). Lot of places to walk. Of course some of the trails are dangerous, but that is what makes life interesting.
In the wintertime the surf can get up to 60 ft on the outer reefs. Fun surf is in the double to triple overhead range. Sometimes a little bigger. I have taken some pretty hard poundings over the years. The worse is when I wipe out and held under for a minute and when I finally make back to the surface there is another wave dropping on my head.
The golf is pretty decent. There are about 8 golf courses within an hour of where I live. I live on the north shore and it can get pretty wet. I hate rain and I move to one of the wettest spots on the island.
No neon lights that I am aware of. To get to the big city of Lihue, I have to wait on several lights. The traffic can get pretty gnarly at times because the main highway is 2 lanes. In fact there are no multi lane highways.
