After a lifetime of collecting burls and slabs of wood for lathe turning, uncle Dick has decided to liquidate his collection. OK, he's not my uncle but he is somebody's uncle and is a good freind so we are trying to help him out. There were over 250 pieces of wood which range in size from 4 lbs to 365 lbs. The species of burl and slab wood include:
Applewood, Ash, Box Elder, American Elm, Cotonwood, Hickory, Yellow Horse Chestnut, Alligator Juniper, Juniper, Maple, , Emory Oak, Grey Oak, California Black Oak, Russian Olive, Pine, Pecan, Japanese Pagoda, Sycamore, Arizona Walnut, Black Walnut, New Mexico Walnut, Yellowwood.

There are too many burls and slabs to list all of the details and pictures on this web site. The pictures and descriptions of each piece have been uploaded to the Yahoo Flickr website to a member account labelled Burly Dennis. If you go to the web address below, you will be able to see all of the pictures as well as the dimensions and weight of each piece. Please note that all of these pieces are irregularly shaped. We have made a best effort attempt to determine a true bd ft value, however, the measurements are going to be inherently innacurate. All of the pieces under 250 lbs were weighed, so that number should be accurate. The pieces over 250 lbs, were estimated using our best measurements and densities from similar, but smaller pieces.

This wood is located in Midland, Michigan so the audience is going to be limited. We have looked into shipping these burls three separate times and each time it increases the price by a factor of 3x or 4x, so it is unlikely that shipping is going to be a viable option.

Just FYI, the stuff you have labeled as "sycamore" is not what Americans call sycamore, so I'd guess that it's what the British call sycamore (which is a maple species, Acer pseudoplatanus, that we call harewood).

Paul, I never thought about it, but you are right. Uncle Dick told us what the species were, we labelled it weighed it, measured it and photographed it. We did almost 300 pieces at the time and just went into automatic (mind numbing) mode. Thanks for the clarification. I will point that out to Dick on Thursday and see what he has to say.

I'd be interested in some of the smaller burls (30-50 lbs) if you can ship to NJ. Also some of the turning blanks BUT I can't read many of the sizes. I'm looking for 12/4 pieces in the range of 8x8 or larger.

My apologies to Big Cougar, Jimmythewoodworker and landfilllumber.

I have been out of state for the last three weeks with limited internet access and didn't check this site. Also, when I did get back late Monday night, I checked my email first and saw a private message from landfilllumber and responded to him first, even though Big Cougar and Jimmythewoodworker had replied here before him. Mea Culpa. Landfilllumber is interested in the whole lot if not a big part of it. But, following the rules of this site, as I understand them, I will honor the inquiries in chronological order.

So, to Big Cougar, yes, the WNM-001 is still available according to my inventory spreadsheet. I am going over to Uncle Dick's tomorrow and will verify that. It weighs 49 lbs and the price, not including shipping is $160.

A comment on shipping. It ain't cheap. I have tried now six times to sell some of this wood by shipping it. Each time the price of shipping has killed the deal. There have been a couple of other times when the worm holes in the Box Elder wasn't helpful. So after six times of running to the shipper with the wood to get a shipping cost and not having recovered a dime for gas, I am a little shy about continuing to butt my head against that wall. So far the cost of shipping has been 2 to 3 times the cost of the wood. In this case it might be less than 1x, but I am not an expert in this area.

So, Big Cougar, if you are still interested with all those caveats, let me know.

See my note to Big Cougar. Again, I apologize for the slow response but I was out of state with limited internet access for the last three weeks.

You are interested in the California Black Oak, in the 30-50 lb range and some of the blanks in the 12/4x8x8 range. I think we might have some pieces that would fit that bill, but I will need to check, because I know we have sold some stuff while I was gone.

Also, see my note to Big Cougar about shipping costs. California Black Oak has a density of about 1.5 so it is going to be even more expensive to ship on a volume bases. I need to know that you are not going to be scared off by shipping costs before I spend more gas money running to the shipper to find out costs. Remember, I don't do this as a business so I am not set up to ship stuff.

Assuming that you have looked at the Flickr site, do you have some specific pieces in the 30-50 lb range in which you are interested. If you do, and can give me their ID number, I can check to see if they are available. I would also appreciate you comments on shipping costs.

As you know, that was the only New Mexico Walnut Burl we have. We don't have any other walnut burls that would fit in a flat rate box. The only walnut burls we have left are the Arizona Walnut and they are significantly different from Black Walnut or the New Mexico Walnut and they won't fit into a flat rate box.

If you are still interested in the WNM-001 given it's price, I could call and see what it would cost if I just wrapped it in cardboard, given the dimensions and the weight and see what they said. Would you want me to do that or are we outside of your price range already?

Dang, double dang even. Last Thursday we drove up 95 from Floriday and came within 6 miles of St Marys.

I don't have better pictures of the Oak turning blocks but will be at Dick's Tomorrow and will try to remember to get some.

The OCB-002 is $51 and is 7x11x11 and if I remember right, the Large Flat Rate Box is only 5.5" tall.

Make sure you are sitting down before you read the rest of this. The OE-002 and OE-004 are Emory Oak burls and are listed at $390 and $600, respectively! Don't shoot the messenger. Dick put the prices on these. They are special looking and when Dick harvested them he was told that he could get $20/lb for them. We were able to talk him down to $15/lb but that was it. It is what it is. To be honest, I don't expect to sell them while Dick is still with us.
