**ENDED**veneer for trade

Here's the batch. It's just over 3 lbs so about 50 sqft. Ought to make at least 3 or 4 pens

It made it in to the post office today - there's some really nice stuff here, thank you very much.

Hope you enjoy what you get in return.

Ken,

The lignum vitae is just what you advertised (excellent), and that's a really nice bunch of little extras you threw in ... will make lots of nice pics for my site. The pen was a real bonus; thanks.

I'm still puzzling over the puzzle :sarcastic:

All in all an EXCELLENT trade from my point of view.

Thanks,

Paul

I made those puzzles for a while - now that I have tools back (but not quite set up yet) I may get back to doing that sort of thing.

I'm not sure what all the extras are as some came from my random box of cutoffs I bought. If you know what that one larger dark chunk is I'd appreciate knowing as I have a lot more of that.

Glad you were satisfied with the trade.

Interesting pics of your basement phinds. Reminds me of work. I work for a company that makes architectural doorskins and plywood.
The amount of veneer cutoffs we throw into scrap carts to hog into fuel is staggering.
The real exotics though, we buy out as there isnt enough call from our customers to justify buying whole palets of veneer.
LOL, dont even know if I should mention this, but I bring boxes of veneer home to use in place of kindling to start up my woodstove!

Dave, how does your company produce the veneer? I've heard of companies selling off the rounded remains(I can't remember the specific term) from rotary veneer machines, but I've never been able to find any place that offers them for sale.

Regardless, I'd love to see some photos from your workplace… Sounds like wood Lady Gaga!:yipee:

We buy the veneer already cut. It's more cost efficient to leave that to the experts and it is difficult to get quality veneer logs. We offer literally every specie, if the customer is willing to pay. Initially, we were a specialty company meaning you could order just 1 sheet, but with rising costs are moving towards big runs to reduce downtimes.
I assume you are referring to the cores, that is, whats left of the log after turning. There is a veneer mill north of us and they sell all cores to a pellet mill. I would hesitate to use the because the logs are soaked in very hot water for a period of time to make them softer to turn, easier? But, I'm not an expert there so I really shouldnt say.
I wish I could provide pictures of the manufacturing process, but we have a very strict policy and they are worried competitors could get a leg up using our processes. LOL, in this day of Google, there arent many secrets left! I will ask if I can take pics of limited areas tho.

Pellet mill!?! There should be some kind of law against selling veneer quality anything to be used for pellets! :dash2::dash2::dash2:

I'm not sure the hot water soak would do anything negative to the wood... Lots of folks boil rough outs to improve stability(madrone is a great example of that), so the cores may actually be easier to dry. If you ever figure out a way to gain access to those cores, I'm all ears!

Interesting. I will keep my ears open.
Sorry phinds for hijacking your thread!

Ken,

The dark stuff is definitely wenge. I thought at first it was panga panga (you almost can't tell them apart without flat cut face grain, and the piece you sent was rift cut) but it's wenge.

Thank you. It's nice to know what you're working with. I just cut up one of the pieces into bottle stopper sized chunks.

Be careful with that stuff ... the splinters can be fiercesome.

Got one yesterday - either from that or one of the pieces of veneer. At any rate I got it out when I came in from the shop, then read about wenge this morning and was glad I did - just in case.
