Personally I don't use Poplar in mine, it's way too soft IMO.

I think using it in a end-grain board would be okay but it's certainly not as cut resistant as the other species. The way Barry laid out the final pattern does minimize the potential problem IMO.
It was grabbed during a weak moment I had. I won't use it again

I bought his plans for it and it's really less complicated then it looks.

Let me know what you think of his plans, Alex Snograss has a DVD on making them I keep thinking about buying.

through the planer with sacrificial rails and they are flat now. Trimmed off rails and trimmed all edges. RO sanded 80-150-220 and then raised the grain with water. Tomorrow I resand with 220, cut finger grooves and oil them. Already started on another style!

That's a real eye-catcher. The colors will pop when you added the oil finish. Very well done. @eaglea1 do you have a photo of the finished boards you made?
