Here is a set of pen blanks from Southern Long Leaf Pine that was recovered from a gristmill in Virginia in 1993 or 1994. I bought a number of the floor joists that measured 24 feet by 14" by 3". Shown below are photos of sections of the beams. They were circular sawn, not hand-hewn, so they date from around 1830-1840 when some of the first circular saw mills were built in VA.

The photos show the tight annual growth rings that are indicative of first growth forests where every tree had to compete for sunshine in the dense virgin forest. I counted over 400 growth rings in one of the beams so the tree was a sapling around 1400 give or take a few years. The section of the main support beam, a 14 x 14 monster is also shown. Look at the annual rings. It was alive during the middle ages.

I cut these pen blanks from the section shown leaning against the wall. The surface of the beams retain their original whitewash. A small section of the whitewashed surface will be shipped with the pen blanks.

Price is $30 plus shipping of $7.00 to anywhere in the USA.

Just to clarify, all the pen blanks are included for the one LOW price of $30 plus shipping. This stuff is hard and heavy and turns beautifully. It will gum up your sandpaper as heat will soften the resin.
But it finishes nicely.

I cut a section from a very old hand-hewn walnut log this morning. It came from a mid-1800's cabin near Johnson City, Tennessee. My dad got this for me from a friend of his who took the cabin down. It's been stacked in my workshop since 1990 and now it's time to be used once again. I will be offering pen blanks from it after I get as many call blanks, pot blanks and pepper mill blanks as I can. Let me know your interest before I cut it and I'll see what I can do. We are going to be away all next week for a family reunion down in Tennessee. Hopefully, I can go scouting for more historic wood when I'm there.

Yes. I have plenty of the virgin growth longleaf pine (still in beams) and lots of the old growth walnut also. What sizes are you looking for? I also have some wormy and non-wormy American Chestnut recovered from old barn beams.

Jerry @HistoryPens turned some of the longleaf pine and sent one to me. It makes a great pen.

Jerry: Can you post some photos of the pens you made? They are very special.

I just cut this section of an old beam for the wood you want. Amazing first growth timber that showed just how slowly this longleaf pine grew back in the 1500s and 1600s.
