Finished the Philippine Ebony piece

I finished the piece of Philippine Ebony I cut of a plank that was purchased from @Mike1950

Regretted, just a bit, hitting it with oil. Darkened it up a bit more than I expected, but I’m okay with it. My next piece will probably try a water based poly.

This cut-off is about 8x10” with 3.5” turned bowl. I’m play around a bit with the spher (2”) and the glass paperweight, which is what my wife suggested. (It’s on our coffee table now with the glass paperweight)

This is the pic I shared earlier when it was still on the lathe (wetted). The lighting is a lot different when comparing locations where the photos are taken. Gorgeous stuff.

Nice, creative piece. I think you ought to get a handful of precious gems like diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, etc and put them in there. There you could invite your guest to take one when they leave. Or alternatively, get some Hershey's kisses.
 
Just had time to look back at both pics. Thanks for info. That is a dramatic difference in color. Nice color now but stunning and vivid colors before. I like WOP but I test a new wood. I built my FIL a box out of incredible redwood burl. It turned almost black. :scare3:
The ebony sap is a lot softer and absorbent than the dark. I might be a glutton for punishment and make a lid out of it.
Looking forward to seeing more turnings!!

I vote for the chocolate. I’ve always got a variety close at hand. Kisses, Dove dark…….just nailed a KitKat. 😀

Yeah - I’ll test out the water based poly before slathering it all over. The other option is to sand to a high grit, like 1000, or 2000, and leave it alone. I’ve occasionally done that with the harder species because they polish up so good.
