I got these a long time ago from Beartooth Woods. They're a Berea product. I'm missing the smaller brass tube. Berea said it's .31 of an inch OD and they don't sell replacements. Does anyone have a place I might look for tubes that size?
This is the kit without the smaller tube which goes inside the top. The cap then seats down inside the missing tube and that smaller tube is tight to the mechanism which advances the lead.
Upon further review, that probably is not what you are looking for. Now that I looked at the kit itself, I see there is a third tube in the kit which is what you are looking for.
Thanks John, yes those are the 8 mm tubes that go into the top and the bottom. They still make the kit, maybe I can convince them to sell the inner tube. I'm checking with Ernie at Beartooth woods to see if he has replacements.
I did indeed get lucky. A gentleman on the IAP forum found some old kits and is sending them to me. While he didn't want anything once I get out I'll be sending him some wood. Thanks for looking John, it is funny there are no replacement tubes for the one smaller one. Like the guy that bought a new suit that had two pair of pants with it, but he burned a hole in the jacket. (have to be old to remember getting a new suit with two pair of pants.)
Thanks Les, I do have a supply of 8mm tubes, unfortunately that's the size of the two outer tubes. Here's a better explanation from the IAP board.
(The larger two tubes are .31 and the smaller is .29. I just measured a set from my last kit. A 7mm tube is .26. The only tube set that seems to be available is the two tube set that are .31--Berea hardwoods #BHW505. But you know that already. Instructions are available. The smaller tube (.29) drives the mechanism and slips inside the larger cap tube(.31). Unfortunately, a 7mm tube will not work but you may be able to sand and reduce the ID of a 7mm tube to slide over the mechanism . Not sure if it is large enough to work properly inside the cap tube (,31).)
It is weird that Berea only supplies the 8mm tube for purchase and that I can't find an outside source for the .29 brass. It's a moot point because now I'll be getting some from a fellow from Maryland. In the future I'm going to be careful about what kits I get and try to stick with standard sizes. Of course these kits are probably over 15 years old so a lot has changed. Having said that, it looks they're still selling it. Doesn't matter, once I get these done I'll be looking at other kits.
