Free to me that is lol. I was helping a friend clean his wood shop today. Calvin is 89 years young and, a real crackerjack. I was admiring a smooth bark[attachment=24381][attachment=24382][attachment=24384][attachment=24385][attachment=24386][attachment=24387][attachment=24388][attachment=24389][attachment=24390] hickory burl plate he had turned. He is also the guy showing me how to turn. He said I have some of it that you can have. It was not large enough for his plates. We went to his wood storage building"Awesome" I tried to get him to let me sell some of wood he was hoarding!!!.The guys that grew up in the depression have a hard time letting anything go. After I saw what he was" giving me" I said no Calvin, I'm not taking that. I'll sell it for you and keep some for myself. This is dry, I hosed the dust off of it. The slabs are 1 3/4 thick, up to 16 iches wide and 48 inches long. Fantastic burl, They just slabbed it out. Most of it has a slight curvature to the slabs, cupping, not bad though. He then said well take this, It's some sort of pine or evergreen burl, that he brought back from Alaska 40 years ago. So some info would be great as to how burl is priced? not BF I is it? SQ inch maybe? And how to cut the pine burl? thanks. A pic of me and my 13 year old grandson with our gifts.

That's funny Jamie. I went to the webpage to get your email address, wrote it down, and then saw your reply here.I had gotten a red oak burl also. I had cut it up and put in a box to send you. and I needed you address again. I didn't put it up on the Gallery because I new we had a trade to post first, so I'll do that now. will get the rest later.

I really like the looks of the pine burl, but I think it might be a spruce burl. I wouldn't cut it up. I'd chuck it on the lathe and turn a hollow form out of it. If you decide to sell it, I'd be interested. The burl slabs could be resawn and used to make a really interesting lazy susan. good looking wood!

I'm afraid some of the deeper cracks in the spruce burl would keep you from turning a hollow form out of it.

It looks even better from the side, all of the eyes are on the 1 1/2 side. That would look sharp on the single-six grips.

I don't worry too much about cracks. I'll wrap the piece with packaging tape to keep it together when I'm hollowing it and then the cracks get filled with stone like lapis, malachite or turquoise. Spruce burl has a very subtle grain so I would probably dye it with multiple dyes to get a layered look and to make the grain pop.
