An easy way of making soso wood look like the fancy stuff, colors in this one are inspired by an antique curly maple highboy.
Start with a completed turning sanded to 400. Using a shop made compression chuck here.
Materials used
Mixed 1 tsp alcohol with 3 drops of medium brown dye and apply an even coat. When dry remove the piece and apply dye to the opening and let it dry, dries quick.
Remount and sand until just the curly is holding the color. Remove again to do the opening then remove all the dust.
Mixed 1 tsp alcohol with 4 drops of honey amber dye. Remount and liberally apply the dye. When dry remove and dye the opening as before… can make darker by adding another drop or 2 of dye and reapply or lighten by wiping with alcohol to remove dye until getting the desired look.
Remount again, the dye process may raise the grain so use oooo steel wool to ensure it silky smooth. Rub more on darker areas to lighten and to even out the color. When done remove all the dust and prep for finishing.
