I'm from the SD area, only recently have gotten into woodworking. I've been looking to make a chess set for years now, and now have the the time. As with all my hobbies it becomes an obsession.

Also love to cook so making some food related items might be on the slate for me.

Hi Derek, thanks for the intro. I have the same obsessive nature, which is why I've avoided numerous invitations from friends over the years to take up golf. :i_dunno:

We love pictures.

:welcome2:

Welcome aboard!

A chess set is an ambitious project... Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I've got a friend that makes a lot of them. Lots of intricate stuff and repetition but a neat one to have under your belt.

Hopefully someone can help me track down some Japanese Oak first and foremost. One obsession meets another.

Welcome Derek,
Really looking forward to your chess set ... I have it on my turning bucket list. Like doc (DKMD) said, it's an ambitious project but one that is within reach of any turner and not limited by equipment size. Key is getting repeatable and with nice details on the pieces.

The Japanese Oak also grows in China and Korea ( Japanese Blue Oak ) and I have a friend that is a pen turner in the service of our great country ( US Army ) he is stationed in Korea and I'll shoot him a message and see if he has access to any.

Howdy and welcome to the club. :hi:
