Hello. We are a tree care company located in Central Virginia specializing in historic tree care and hazardous tree removal. We come across a lots of gorgeous and useful wood. We are in the process(slow process) of building a shop and getting into woodworking and making use of some of the wood and trees we come across on our jobs.
We've been saving burls and unusual spalted pieces of wood and may be offering some for sale soon. Feel free to PM with any requests.
 
Welcome Cristine we're glad you joined. It's important that you first read and familiarize yourself with the rules before selling or inviting members to PM you with requests (since that's not the way it works).

We'll all be watching with anticipation as you two start your journey into woodworking and hope we can be an integral part of your learning experience, and of course we look forward to seeing you list some awesome wood once you familiarize yourself with the community and the way t works!

So other users couldn't message me and say "hey, I'm looking for species/size/etc. Let me know if you come across anything"???
The reason I'm curious is because of the quantities of wood and trees that we, as a tree care business, deal with on a daily basis, it wouldn't be sensible to cut things and save pieces here and there, unless it was something really impressive. It would make much more sense to keep a piece of XYZ on Wednesday if someone had recently requested it vs. keeping it and then just sitting on it with hopes of someone interested.
And I did read through the rules, the only thing I saw that seemed applicable was not offering someone for sale unless it was actually in your possession, which isn't what I'm offering.

Can you clarify this for me?

They would need to start a thread in the WTB forum. They could tag you there to bring it to you attention. This is part of what is meant by "...every trade must start and end in a thread." Do members PM another members in the manner you're describing? Yes it happens, but if they do they will also post a thread. It's best to start a thread because someone beside the member you PM is likely to have what you're looking for. The bottom line is no trading is allowed behind the forum (via PM only) because what would be the point in having the forum?

I'm confused that these barters must start within a thread. Is there a particular reason these transactions are required to be public? Not that I get on very many forums, but it seems complicated.

So if we come across something impressive, we'd have to scroll through the WTB forum to see if anyone is interested, only to find out someone is, cut the piece, contact them, wait for their response, only to find out they are no longer interested?? Time-wise this just gets difficult for us, so maybe this isn't the appropriate avenue to do what I was thinking of. Seems like direct requests and correspondence is more efficient.

No, you can post it on the For Sale forum and leave it until someone says they want it. There's no "end date" nor are there any fees, commissions, or other fees and commissions on top of those fees and commissions. This forum is as simple as it gets. And did I mention it's free?

I answered that in post #8. Think about it, would you and your husband operate a forum where members could do everything by PM only and no one gets the benefit of possibly trading with anyone else? You might do it if you got paid to do it, but no one here does we do it free of charge.

Oh Ok. See that really just doesn't make a bit of sense for us to do all that and then just hang on to the wood in hopes that days, weeks, months, someone is interested. This is not a back yard tree business, the actual work on the trees is plenty, if I asked my climber to make 10 more cuts so I could throw a block in the back of my truck(with the hopes of a sale), he'd likely shoot me! :scare3:

I don't see how public vs private makes a difference. If someone wants something and they have a go-to on who to get it from, I don't see why any of that should be posted for anyone else to see. Maybe some people want to see what kind of barters or trades are offered, maybe others just choose to deal direct with a seller or buyer.

I'm only trying to understand your rules so I can do this sensibly, I'm not trying to argue or anything. It doesn't seem as though this is the proper avenue for us to offer our products; or by-products so to say.
 
Cristine no problem at all. I don't see why psoting it in front of thousands of members versus sending PMs to one person is better for you but no hard feelings WB is not for everyone and I agree with you that it doesn't fit your needs. Happy new year. :ok:
 
Welcome! I'm glad I see you're interested in seeing the results of your tree business turn into something other than firewood.

I get wood from a local arborist who at one point was also a turner. He briefly dabbled with trying to process his wood into turning blanks, but he ultimately chose not to pursue it... There's a tremendous amount of work involved in processing green wood correctly for turning blanks and probably even more work involved in processing and drying boards for flatwork.

I'm not trying to disuade you from making a run at the business, but it's a lot of work. I hope your aspirations pay off for you and your business, and I hope we get to see some of that spectacular wood!

We have so much wood, we can't even GIVE it away for firewood. We have a huge farm and have a dumping area, and offer it to people all the time for free. A lot of what is there is over 4' in diameter and no one has any way of working with it, splitting it, etc.


Oh yes, I understand how laborious the process is just to get a blank. I have woodworkers on my side of the family, some who do carvings and ornate tiny things and others that make furniture. I would just want to offer the entire burl off of a tree. Buy can do as he pleases. I have 4 Black Walnut burls sitting on our sidewalk, and I finally got tired of looking at them so I stumbled across this site. 3 are the size of a volleyball and we have some amazing cankers and huge burls that required the Bobcat to get them home. We have no woodworking equipment, so strictly just raw green wood for someone else to process.

I decided I would just add another page to our website under "services wanted" and then maybe just a general post on Craigslist...
 
Welcome, I've been wanting to email local tree trimmers and ask about what all they do with their wood, bet they see a lot of awesome stuff. Never have because i figured they don't save it or wouldn't want to take the time to deal with some random guy wanting a little wood haha.
 
Christine why don't you post a thread of the 4 black walnut burls and post some pictures of them. Put a price on each one and see if they sell. I would bet if the price is fair they will sell pretty quickly. BTW welcome to WB.
 
Christine, Welcome from South Texas! I think Scott has a good idea, I think you would be surprised at the responses you get. I'm sure our system seems bass-ackward to you, but please give it a chance, I think it could work out well for everybody! Tony

Would you mind if I post two pics here and y'all give me ideas about whether it's worth us doing this? I don't have these pieces. I could have kept them if I knew there was a reason to, but we chip anything up to 20 inches, so a lot of what I see that is super cool, the guys just toss in the chipper. Like I said, asking them to cut and save stuff is the last thing they probably want to hear.
