Hello folks...I am planning to make a MDF lathe for round small pieces (chisel handles...Stool legs...etc) at 500 mm maximum lenght.

The main idea is a drill turn the wood and the router bit cuts.

I"ll use bearings at both sides...my friend must to help at metal lathe.

See the main idea below

Bearings at both sides...just thinking about the "bearing box"

Move until 500 mm

Like a dowel center at the bearing

Just for picture a tapered way for router

Can use a bushing

I"ll show the evolution

Very interesting. I’m just wondering if it’s worth it at this point. Cheap lathes aren’t that hard to come by. Just find some estate sales and collect. At that point it may be better to keep the router separate.

Thanks for comment. I live in Brazil and lathes here are not cheap .
But I don't have skills enough to make a real round piece using lathe chisels and don't use a lathe many times (never used a real one) ...is just for one or other job.
The MDF used is leftovers from other projects.

I did this few years ago

There's not a lot of info out there on craftsman router craft lathes but if you can find some it might give you some ideas on your build.

That's a nice set of pictures. Folks can get a good idea what you are doing looking at only the pictures. If you decide to upgrade, there is a cheap book called router magic that has maybe 25 to 30 pages of plans for a geared router lathe that will do spirals as well. Here in the usa , it costs maybe 6 to 10 bucks for a used copy plus delivery. The book is Router Magic by Bill Hylton
