Is hot melt glue OK to use with a glue block?
Is there a better alternative?
Thanks again!

I don't trust anything structural with hot melt glue. If you can reverse what you are turning to turn the waste block off, I'd just glue it directly with regular wood glue. Otherwise I'd make a paper joint with newspaper. Glue on both pieces of wood and sandwich a piece of newspaper between. When you need to remove it, a couple taps on a chisel should separate the joint.

Hot glue is OK for small items, but I wouldn’t trust it for anything large. CA is a little stronger but still not great for large stuff. I’d suggest wood glue if you’ve got the time or epoxy if you want to get turning a little quicker.

I am a bit of a tight wad when I saw up figured timber and I try to maximize the use of it. So I try to prepare my blanks in advance by gluing blocks on them with whichever Titebond glue that's out at the time. After all the turning is done I use a Longworth style Chuck and Jerry's Tailstock Centre to remove the glue block.
