OK, it has been suggested that we make a list of minimum size requirements for things we make.
The following is just a sample of what the final list will have. Please, by all means add to the list if I don't have it already. I will edit this post to include the added info.

Game calls of all types
Predator Calls

Duck Calls
2" x 2" x 5"

Turkey Pot Calls
4" x 4" x 1-1/8"

Turkey Trumpet Call Blanks
1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 7"

Paddle Style Call
2" x 2" x 14"

Vases
4" x 4" x 6"

Bowls
6" x 6"x 2"

Pens
3/4" x 3/4" x 6"

Bottle Stoppers
1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 2"

Fishing Lures
yo-yo's

1911 Grip Blanks
3/8" x 1-3/4" x 5" or blocks size 1" x 1-3/4" x 5"

Single Action Revolver Blanks
1/2" x 2-1/4" x 5" or blocks size 1-1/4" x 2-1/4" x 5"

Knife Scales
3/8" x 1-5/8" x 5- 1/2"
or blocks size 1" x 1-5/8" x 5-1/2"

Rifle Dimensions or Shotgun/2-Piece Rifle Blank
16 - 21" length
6 - 7-3/4" height at butt end
3" height at muzzle end
*2-1/2" - 3" thick
forend piece measures 14" x 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"

Shotgun/Rifle 1 Piece Blank
28 - 41" length
5-1/2 - 7-3/4" height at butt end
3" height at muzzle end
*2-1/2" - 3" thick
^^^*Minimum thickness is 2-1/2" and thicker than 3 if cheek rests are to be carved.

Slingshot Palm Swell Blanks
3/8" x 1-1/2" x 4"

Salt n Pepper Mill Blanks
2-3/4" x 2-3/4" x 6"

Classical Guitar Back
22" x 8" x 3/8" (x2 and book matched)

Classical Guitar Sides
32" x 4" x 3/8" (x2 and quarter sawn) but I like 48" length because I can cut the veneers off of it as well.

Electric Tops
22" x 8" x 1/4" (x2 and book matched)
22" x 8" x 5/8" (x2 and book matched)

Archtop Guitar Back
23" x 8" x 1-1/4" (x2 and book matched)

Archtop Guitar Sides
Same as classical guitar sides

Guitar Neck Blanks
35" x 3 "x 1" (quarter sawn is best, but not absolute)

Thanx for looking, and hopefully adding your info here. It will go to a good home. :good2:

Minimum size for duck calls depends on style, but I would guess a 2x2x5 would cover almost every type of barrel or insert. Some styles work with 1.5x1.5x

Pen blanks are generally 3/4 x 6"

There's really no such thing as a minimum bowl or vase blank, but for either, two of the dimensions should be the same(ie 8x8x4 or 6x6x3). This may seem silly, but I don't want to buy wood that I'll have to waste, and a 10x8x4 rectangle will only yield an 8" round... I'd waste 20% of the blank before I ever got it on the lathe. Bowl blanks are generally cut for face grain turning while vase blanks are generously endgrain.

I can get by with 2.75sq by 6" or greater for mill blanks.

Stopper should be minimum 1.5" square by 2" long and most prefer them a little longer.

I was thinking the same thing, but I had to ask anyways...just to be safe.

thank you..

Yikes. Okay.

I usually like to start with a thicker board (or wider) and rip it myself so I look for these dimensions in 4/4 and 5/4 sizes rather than the minimum listed as asked in the thread.

Classical guitar back
22"x8"x3/8" (x2 and book matched)

Classical guitar sides
32"x4"x3/8" (x2 and quarter sawn) but I like 48" length because I can cut the veneers off of it as well.

Electric tops
22"x8"x1/4" (x2 and book matched)
22"x8"x5/8" (x2 and book matched)

Archtop guitar back
23"x8"x1.25" (x2 and book matched)

Archtop guitar sides
Same as classical guitar sides

Guitar neck blanks
35"x3"x1" (quarter sawn is best, but not absolute)

Where I request quarter sawn boards is where there is greatest chance of the piece warping after starting to work the piece, like as in bending the sides or holding strings at tension.

FWIW :morning2:

Typically pen blanks are 3/4sq(or round) by 5-1/4

This length is just right for shipping in SFRB, you can get 20 in a box of this size. If you make them 6" you can only get 11 in a box without deforming it to the point where USPS folks will not allow shipping. FYI.....you results might vary

Bottle stoppers: 1-1/2sq(or round) x 2-1/2 is about perfect(can get 10 in a SFRB this size).

Turkey pot: 4sq x 1 on the small side but it is preferred 5sq x 1-1/8 for most.

Scott (custom cutting is better though for everything else) B

No knife blocks, scales?

3/8 x 1 5/8 x 5 1/2 in pairs for scales

as for the blocks i would let the more experienced knifemakers decide

Whoops! I'll add it in later tonight. Thanx !

I read Doc's note about minimums on vases and bowls, and there's alot of variation likely. For purposes of having something there that would satisfy a big population, I'd say these are some good starting points...certainly are exceptions to either side of these sizes.

Vases: 4"x4"x4"
Bowls: 6"x6"x2"

I cut these on the big side, guess it's a 'try to give the customer a better deal' thing.... Mine are 2"wide x 6" length x 2" thickness(cut in half to book match them of course). I probably can't get as many in a SFRB this way, but a 'crafty person' might be able to get two sets of scales out of one blank:good2:

Scott (loving this list) B

I have not seen many box call blanks but I would think 2 x2x8 for standard style and 2x2x14 for paddle style. Just a thought.

I'll let this topic run for a few more days then make the official "list".

Thank you everyone who has chimed in. :)

This is a great idea I especially like the sizes for musical instrument blanks, it seems like they are more standardized than something like bowl blanks.
