I'll never be able to say I've never made a pepper mill again

So I'm still waiting for my Delta to come back form the shop so I decided to work on a pepper mill over on the Oneway today. Used an adaptation of @Kevin 's tubular crush grind idea. Used a block of crosscut Oak I had laying around so I wouldn't feel bad if I screwed it up.

A few things,

1) I cut some square notches for the tabs on the mill mechanism to go into to connect the piece of 1" PVC I used, Way to much screwing around, The next one I'll just drill a hole and pin it like Kevin did.

2) The pin and O-Ring setup for the top works great but took some dinking around to get the depth of the grooves just right so it's tight but not too tight. with practice I think it'll go easier.

3) I bought a bag of pepper seeds and filled it up but when I turn the knob it just leaves these little black specks in a pile on the table.... Not a single pepper has popped out of the end yet.......

Finished with several coats of CA, sanded and buffed and waxed.

C and C always welcome.

Thank you, I know several folks mentioned problems with the O-Rings in your design thread but of course I'm stubborn and figured with the smooth PVC it might be worth giving it a whirl. Initially I found that if it's too tight a fit you risk pushing the mechanism back out of the mill but a little trial and error ( I had a 2 inch piece of the pipe I used for testing while it was still on the lathe) it seems to work well, I'll let my wife use it a while to see if I have any complaints after some use. I also made the stub that fits into the tube a separate part and then glued it into a hole drilled in the top so I could keep the grains in line. Eventually I'll try one of those that looks seamless with this method and see if it works.

Nicely done! The peg at the top makes sense to me, and I like the tab slots at the bottom. You could epoxy it in to the bottom of you want to keep it from pulling out.

The tab slots work really well but are a PITA to cut if a guy was going to do a bunch, for the next one I think I'll just slide the PVC over the mechanism and drill an 1/8 inch or 3/16 hole and put a pin in it. Either that or slide a dowel into the PVC and use my mortising machine to punch the slots......

Or just drill an oversized hole for the tabs... The square slots show the craftsmanship, but it's a detail few will appreciate.

Colin you improved on my first go at it for sure. I also think drilling the holes for the tabs is a good idea, and I like the 1" pipe. Now I think the only reason to use a 3/4" or 1/2" pipe is if one wants to turn a smaller diameter mid section (which I do like to do) but even with a 1" pipe, a narrow pinup girl shape is probably still possible.

With 1" Schedule 40 you need to drill a 1 and 5/16ths or 1 and 3/8ths hole. I started with a 1 and 1/4 hole (Eyeballed it as I was playing mad engineer) and it was too small so I turned the PVC down a hair, I'll measure the pipe and bits with a calipers tomorrow and figure out the correct bit
