Wow. Some extremely cool stuff. What surprises me is how much people paid for that oak bowl from bill luce. (no. 253)

Don’t get me wrong, it’s an amazing bowl and definitely beyond my skill but it feels so simple compared to all the other amazing turnings.

For instance, lady in red (no. 106) seems way more complex and sold for a fifth of the oak bowl.

Does anyone know why this is except for the flukes of capitalism and auctions? There might be something technical I’m missing. That’s why I ask.

Sometimes there are factors beyond the piece itself. This was donated to the auction by Monica Luce (I believe Bill Luce's widow), and the half the price was to be donated to a charity. So, in addition to the piece itself, there is "who made the piece", there is the "in memory and honor of" factor, and the donation to the Brain Injury Alliance. Without knowing the motives of the people who bid on the item, it's not possible to know how the price was reached.

And I expect everyone bidding recognized just how difficult it is to achieve that beautiful form.

Beautiful and creative pieces. Had to be some serious time invested in the making of some of those. Just imagine the sanding and finishing of some of those with all the cut outs and stuff.

That’s a fluke of capitalism and auctions. If you try hard enough it will sell for less.
Funny but it misses the point. Picasso is not a one time flute. And my understanding is Europe is more socialist and less capitalist.
If I make a perfect Maloof rocker, does mine sell at same price as the master himself.... I will answer. NOOOO!

As I said, a fluke. He is a fluke because he is one out of a million who's work is worth a lot. Not someone who made one very expensive picture.

Also, Europe is definitely more socialist than capitalist. Your understanding is correct.

I disagree. The guy that sold the banana for $$$$$$$ is a fluke. Picasso did it for decades, still going up in price. Proof is in the endurance..
