I’m John and as the title says I live in Charlotte, NC, where I like to do both furniture work and turning. I’ve recently gotten into marquetry, so am trying my hand at that as well and starting small with some boxes and will then move into some larger pieces. A few pics are below of things done in the past 6 months. Looking forward to being part of the community and I’m on a few others as well.

Thanks, Chuck. My most frequent are koa with ebony accent in segmented turnings, figured maple and sapele for furniture. I also really like to work with burls and spalted woods for turning, cocobolo, cherry, and aspen. I’m fascinated by spheres and spheres boxes, and generally like to work with burls at approximately 100 mm diameter with 5mm thick walls, though I’ve done as large as 12” diameter spheres.

Thanks, Daniel, and being on a number of different woodworking forums helps with understanding how they usually work. And my wife and I love Austria - we’ve spent a fair amount of time there.

Where have you been? It’s not a very big country but there is lots to see and do.

We’ve spent a fair amount of time in Vienna, including some concerts at Strauss Concert House - we saw Alma Deutscher there last year and it was pretty amazing - and of course going through Schunbrunn. We’ve also spent time in Salzburg, Linz, Melk, and a few others. The Melk Abbey is fascinating and we’ve become big fans of the Gruner Veltliner (harder to get in the states). We’re hoping to get back in 2027, but the travel schedule is pretty full.

Very cool. Melk is very interesting. I can definitely recommend going into the alps. Somewhere like filzmoos or Saalbach hinterglemm are amazing spots for a hike. Tauplitz is very good too.

Some of the smaller vineyards like Thallern also make very good whites. Austria doesn’t make good red (with exceptions) but regional wines are often interesting. Rotgipfler and the local Riesling and Grau Burgunder all make for a good pairing with some lemon and broccoli pasta or as an aperitif.

If you go next year, consider a meet-up. If I’m in Austria at the time we can exchange some stories and I’ll give you some wine and wood.
