This one is in the progress more than two months. first Ben @bench1holio sent his favorite wood, curly false sandalwood, then one knife got a crack during HT so i had to make another one, exactly the same. I have seen the crack just about when i got to 600 grit, or almost to the finish. Wood had been prepared already, drilled the holes, and this wood is very unique, like Ben said....
So i made another, using old knife as a template, the holes needed to be drilled exactly the same so the wood can be fitted. Yes, i made it and here it is finally.
Steel is ATS 34, 59 hrc, satin finish 800 grit. Simple filework. The one before got very complicated FW and its the reason it cracked during quenching, i made some sharp edges. Robert says they are called stress risers, and it happens.
Wood is curly false sandalwood, very hard wood from Australia. The scent is awesome, and its oily. Dont recall using so much sand paper. It gets clogged instantly. You just cant capture the beauty of the curls in photos.
Sanded to 12000 with micro mesh, finished with one coat of pure tung oil. I tried one small piece of wood with tru oil and it doesnt dry. Maybe if i left it for couple of days but just cant wait that long.
Now to make a leather sheath.
