Fascinating! Statistics can be construed in many ways. Think the Redwoods in California are rated largest in other respects. Chuck

I think general Sherman is the largest tree by volume
That depends what you count as one tree. Check for the massive aspen forest in utah. They are all genetically identical and connected via the root system. It is definitely one singular organism. By volume that would beat any single trunk tree very quickly.

There's a book titled "Wild Trees" by Richard Preston, 2007, that describes the search for the tallest trees. It centers primarily in the redwoods on the west coast of the US. Pretty good read. There's a small "cult" of naturalist who do this and they're super secret about what they find and where they find it. They used to have to climb the tree and drop a string to measure the exact height but now they have survey equipment. Some died while climbing the trees. At the last writing I think a tree they called Hyperion was the tallest they'd found - over 116 meters tall.

Hyperion is what I heard too.
